Some guy on the bus today was able to snatch a phone out of a complete stranger's hand and walk off! Absolutely appalling and audacious. Hopefully the bus company can give the victim some sort of phone since it was stolen on their property, as the camera will no doubt have the thief on camera....

That has become a very common crime these days.
That is why phone manufacturers are under pressure to build a remote deactivation mechanism inside their phones so that if they are stolen, the owner can have them rendered useless, thus taking away the incentive for thieves to steal them in the first place. |

Probably not even an issue. The phone company can track and ban the phone so it can't be used or resold (at least on their network) and could even be tracked down. If the phone was bought from a service provider, it probably has both a contract and options to receive a new phone when it's stolen or lost. Why should the bus company have to do anything?

Now that you've finally stopped snatching other people's cell phones on public transit, we figured there was just no reason anymore.
But start that sh*t up again & .... |

Several people in San Francisco have had their Google Glasses ripped off their faces and smashed. Since Google opened up an office in the town, residents have become very anti-Google. There've even been anti-Google protests. Google, it seems, has come to epitomize all that is evil. I don't quite understand it, myself. |

From what I understand, they're causing all the "affordable" housing in the city to disappear because landlords are selling out to investors who are buying up older properties, evicting everyone then fixing the places up & renting them to all those high salaried Google employees at astronomical rates.
Google even has charter deals with local bus companies that make the rounds every morning, picking up Google employees, giving them a free ride to work, then bringing them back in the evening, which a lot of people are complaining is tying up traffic. So not only are they generating resentment towards them for being behind the gentrification of the old neighborhoods, they're also responsible for clogging traffic even worse than it already is. |

SF has been gentrifying as far back as when I first moved there...and much before. In the 70s, the gays pushed the Irish working class out of the Castro. In the late 80s, white artists helped push the blacks out of the Fillmore (now called "the Lower Haight"). In the 90s, the dot-commers were pushing people out of the Haight and other areas (it happened to me), and since the 2000s, the white hipsters have been taking the Mission District away from the Hispanics. I even remember a few years ago, reading about gays complaining that too many straight people are now moving into the Castro. When I moved there in '80, the black population was approx 13%. They've now got it down to about 6%, and it continues to drop. I probably helped that along when I moved there. At some point, everyone's been pushed out and everyone's pushed someone else out. As much as SF pays lip service to the loss of minorities and the working class, residents who can afford to live there, along with the governing bodies of the city, love it, and wouldn't have it any other way. It makes SF a wealthy town. Hell, if my house was for sale in SF, it would be valued at about $1,500,000 to $2,000,000. So, when people in SF complain that they're being pushed out, they never think about the fact that they themselves at one time, pushed someone else out. It's just sour grapes. |

Sounds to me like the difference in this case is that the people who are being pushed out are not just members of one particular ethnic or social group & that the pushing out is happening for the benefit of the emplyees of a private corporation.
I'm not saying that makes it worse, but it provides a single, identifiable target for those affected by it to place the blame on & I can also see why the fact that a multi-billion dollar corporation is benefitting from it would make it just that much more galling to all those service industry workers who are having to move to some outlying area & make a long commute or to leave the area altogether. |

It could be the wave of the future. Maybe people just need to accept it, and move somewhere more affordable. People have been doing that forever. It used to be that you could work a service job in your own neighborhood. By the late 80s, service workers had to live in the more outlying areas. And by the mid-90s, they had to live in Oakland. Somehow, though, SF has maintained plenty of waitresses to work its plentiful restaurants. So, a lack of service workers has really not been a problem for the city. One thing about San Franciscans is that they think they deserve to live there, no matter how expensive it is. So they fight and protest and blog, but ultimately, it changes nothing. Money talks louder than a few assaults on Google Glass wearers ever will. |

If you look up the name in Anna's profile (Anna Anderson), you'll see that Anna Anderson was someone who claimed to be a Grand Duchess of Russia from the 1920s till she died in the 80s, and is known as "The Great Impostor" and one of the "Top 10 Impostors" of all time. Hmmmm... |
