I found this 1979 Smokey the Bear commercial on Youtube. Weird commercial, didn't hate it but I thought it was surreal. At first, I thought it was some kind of joke or parody.

Who records a burning tree without putting it out? Smokey would be disappointed.
We need a Retro Ads and/or PSA section on here. Old ads and most PSAs are indeed, for the most part, surreal and creepy. |

Thats pretty much a myth, sure in rare cases people start illegal fires in the forest..but a huge majority of forest fires are started from lightning strikes

The messages are aimed at the ones that aren't started by lightning strikes. Usually with lightning there is rain. Besides, people back in the 1970s were know where near as enviornmentally conscious as they are today. Lighting campfires and not properly extinguishing them was a common practice. |

We love and live in the wilderness...we take 'fire safety' VERY seriously (I get angry very quick when I catch idiots).
When driving through the Mountains, I still see Smokey the Bear all over the place.
All the same, *I* prefer Smokey the Beer.

We just got a fireplace insert a couple months ago, and everytime I spend over an hour trying to get a fire started, I think about stuff like this.
Maybe I should have a few beers, light cigarettes and toss those in there carelessly? Could be that I'm trying too hard....
