I'm guessing that crafty old Thor had some inside information.

It took me a long time to get to 15 bucks an hour and I was in a skilled position with years of experience.  That's only $31,200 a year.

I think that $15/hr applies only to department managers.  The crap they have to put up with is unreal.  I didn't have to put up with that kind of crap when I made more than twice that amount.  Besides, they seem to prefer to place blacks and Hispanics and women in the better-paying jobs.  I think it's part of their commitment to diversity or something.

Despite their insistence otherwise, they're not very employee-oriented.  Hell, I was working in the freezer (-14 degrees) most of today, and they don't even supply gloves, let alone a jacket, or equipment required to get the job done that actually works in sub-zero temps.

Damn!

Did they let you buy a jacket and some gloves? I wouldn't last long there.

I would've gone out to the sales floor, taken a pair of work gloves off the rack and used them. Fûck em if they didn't like it.

And why -14° anyway? Freezing is 32°. Seems like it would cost a lot more in energy consumption to keep it that cold.

That's exactly what I did.  I'd heard that, in cases like this, all I have to do is to have the claims people remove the tag with the UPC code so that it can be scanned and the product can be replaced.  So that's what I did.  I don't know if this is protocol or just a way around the system (to keep it from being treated as a stolen item).  Somehow, I doubt I could've done this with a nice winter jacket.  The price tag on the gloves was like $7.

I got the fingerless kind so that I could tap out stuff on the scanner as long as I could before my fingertips turned blue.  You can't tap those scanner buttons with regular gloves.

I Googled "freezer temperature" when I got home yesterday, and found that your basic home freezer is around 0 degrees.  I'm guessing there's a law about freezer temps in commercial settings.  The extra-low temps might be to mitigate any rise in temperature if the door should have to be left open for any considerable period of time.  That's just my guess.

For some reason (based on something I was watching on TV a few days ago re the solar system), the other day, I Googled "absolute 0 degrees".  Absolute 0 degrees is not 0 degrees.  It's like 460 degrees below zero, the temperature at which atoms stop moving.  That would be pretty nippy.

I work at Walmart -- and yes the pay is not great. Nothing I am used to earning. But, on the other hand, I would quit today if I was not satisfied with the pay versus my job duties.

^  Same here, comrade.  The money is sad, but I'm actually enjoying the job.  The whole place is kinda ridiculous.  I was off today, and I was bored.  I'm actually looking forward to Black Friday.
