I've worked on that backlot many times.
Drove a golf cart all over it.

On a lighter note Colbert's take on it has managed to be absolutely hilarious:

When my son was in L.A. for his last semester (January - April this year), the apartment complex where he stayed backs up onto the backlot of NBC/Universal.  (His college leases the apartments as dorms.)  He told me that he'd walked around that very area that burned, toward the end of April.  (I remember him calling me from there.)  At least he got to see it.

But yeah, those black clouds of smoke were scary!
You're just jealous 'cause the voices only talk to me--and Yutolia!

Heres a another site on the story, for some reason the previous site forces me to close Firefox

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/24916515/

They said many parts of the BTTF Square have been destroyed, luckily the Clocktower has been spared but is damaged, more of the loss is the iconic New York square where famous films such as Dirty Harry, and The Blues Brothers were filmed heres more info:

That was one raging fire! The news footage gave me nightmares.

How unusual! It was actually a bit refreshing to hear that, for a change...

After reading the story, it doesn't sound like all that much was damaged.

Good thing no lives were lost.

Not the same place, but when we went to Universal Florida, we rode the King Kong ride. The expression on my then 6 year old daughter's face when they played back the video of our ride was priceless.

Hooty, as I understood it, only the King Kong display area was damaged - and a video vault...sometimes it seems things get so big that safety and control start to slip - and if it isn't that, maybe it is simply a matter of probability...
