IHS- An extremely long discussion on this forum about the Stupid Hubby thing can be found here. I don't really think they were intending to put a jab like that in there. If you think about it, there was no one else in that family they could have put that cast on without making it look really bad. Look at it this way - picture the ad with the wife ending up with the cast while the announcer reads off the side effects. It would almost sort of give the impression that her broken bone was connected in some way to her use of the IUD. And if one of the kids had a broken bone she would seem less like a "super-mom". (Which is not a comment on any parent whose kids have broken their bones; I'm only speaking in terms of Ad Land.) And I get the impression that you already know this, but I'll say it anyway just in general - listing the accomplishments of the wife shouldn't be seen as an insult or critical of the husband. Unless this is the 1950's, which last time I checked, it is not.

I agree about the reading of the side effects, but it actually is necessary because the IUC, unlike its predecessor the IUD (which was somewhat infamously unreliable, although I believe they've improved them) also has a chemical component similar to oral contraceptives or Norplant. So the side effects are for more than just the device itself. Plus, you never know with people. A friend told me about a (very young) Mom who had a baby about a year ago and was trying to get her life in order so she could really be a Mom. My friend talked to her about her situation and recommended that she use an IUC, which (ideally) gets implanted 6 weeks after the birth of a child. Well, when she went in to have it implanted they couldn't do it. She had managed to get pregnant again within 6 weeks of giving birth! My friend was like "I guess I should have mentioned that it doesn't work before you have it put in, but I would have thought that was common sense."

This ad for the Mirena intrauterine contraceptive (IUC) features the power-mom who has gotten a promotion, bought a house, coached soccer, learned French, moved to Memphis, planted a garden, went skiing, finished a book, and finished a sentence (did I get it all?). My issues:

1) They just couldn't resist slipping a "stupid husband" jab in here. Notice the montage of family images after Mom gets done with her litany of accomplishments, while the voice-over is describing the product. There's one clip where the family is all bundled up to go skiing. In the next clip, the family is back from the ski trip, and guess who broke his leg? yah, you know it had to be STUPID HUSBAND!!!!Disapprove

2) Does it strike anyone else as strange that potential IUC users have to be reminded that there might be one or more side effects to sticking a foreign object deep inside your body? Hello!!! (yeah, I know, legal issues, but still.)

3) And finally...anybody know who this actress is? She must be the latest hot commodity in commercials--she's shown up in three or four others in the last few months. There's something about her facial expressions or overall attitude that just bugs me, and it's the same in all the ads I've seen her in.
