It really bugs me that, over the past two years or so, it's apparent that the entire TV industry has collaborated on synching up their commercial breaks. I'm talking local stations, networks, and cable.

It used to be when one show took a break, you could flip to another station and catch a minute or two of another show. I'm one of those "typical guys" who routinely tries to watch two or three shows at once, and this practice is severely limited by the trend toward the universal commercial periods.

I guess I can understand this. The era of the remote control made it awfully easy for us consumer lemmings to watch something besides the commercial that was funding the show we were watching. So I suppose it's only fair that the networks try to force us to watch their ads by reducing our "options" to watching other commercials.

Still, it bugs me. I'm sure this is at least partly to blame for the abrupt, illogical "break points" you see in many TV reruns and old movies.

Hundreds of threads killed.

Yes,Yes,Yes! I'm a channel surfer just because I can't stand being yelled at or told I've got a yeast infection or some stupid thing while my show is on break. Then I've gone to channel after channel and so many times the very same ones are on another channel. So here I go surfing at least 7 or 8 channels and they all have something to pimp or some special way to show you how to live a better life.
Then have you been on a site where you complain about the said offenses and you get the message "just turn the channel if you don't like what's on"? Geeze, damned if you do and damned if you don't.
I'm about to loose control and I think I like it

Oh tell me about it.  I also turn the channel when a commercial break came on.  But now with every channel having the break at the SAME DAMN TIME.

They do the same thing on Radio too!Disapprove A Sure sign a Station or Network is owned by the same Company will be the Commercial Breaks are also exactly at the same times too. Often they will even air the Same Commercial!Dead
A recent poll says all the bad boys and girls would prefer getting lumps of coal from Santa Claus instead of a Pay-TV subscription!

In radio, we are taught by "consultants" that the best time to air spot breaks (commercials breaks) is at 20 and 50 past the hour.  The theory behind this is to "sweep" the listener through the bottom of the hour or over the top of the hour, because that way you help to increase your quarter hour ratings numbers.  You don't lose the listener as you are going from one quarter hour to the next.

As far as TV goes, I believe the same is also true.  However, obviously they need to break at the top of the hour (and sometimes bottom) because that is a natural break in the programming.  Of course, for non-music radio stations, that is also true.

I'm not saying I agree with this stuff, I'm not even saying I truly understand it.

There are a lot of 'almost simultaneous' breaks, where an ad will be on two stations at once, but there'll be 5-10 seconds' difference between the two.

What's worse, is not only the synchronized ads across different stations, but the same inane ad repeated instantly, or with one very short mini-ad in between! Followed by, of course, some witless PSA from your friend and mine, the Ad Council!!! Boo, hissssss!!!

A message brought to you by this station and the Ad Council.
