Seriously.

Nobody is going to find your post about the E-surance commercials if you can't spell insurance.

Misspelling is a common cause of redundant threads on the forums.
Responsible members do a search before they make a new post about a commercial,
and their search won't turn up squat if you spell GEICO "geeco" or "gieco" or "gieko".

So pay attention and spell things properly. Don't be a douche. Here endeth the lesson.

Unfortunately, it's impossible to spell our sh*t correctly, because everytime we try, an asterisk shows up in place of the letter "i".

Same thing happens when trying to spell our f**k correctly. Except in this case, TWO asterisks come up in place of required letters.

We could spell our sh*t AND our f**k correctly if that didn't happen.

Oh, and BTW.... I'm not trying to be a douche, here.

Some people can't spell, and don't care...which is probably why they can't spell to begin with.

But what I don't get is, when someone misspells a word in their topic---and then sees that word spelled differently (correctly) in others' responses---why that person doesn't think of going back and changing it.

Well, when it comes to doing searches, the old excuse "People will know what I mean by Gieko" just doesn't work anymore.  The search feature is not "people".

By the way, Nathan, I'm glad you spelled GEICO in all caps.  I don't know how many people know it's an acronym, not a word.

I don't see multiple topics being a big problem here at CIH.

Obviously it happens, but not an enormous amount, I don't think.

Not to the point of it being a huge problem, anyway.

Doing a search first just seems to take the spontaneity out of a good, inspired rant.

The thing is, when someone starts another thread on a subject that's already been done, their rant may fall on deaf ears (blind eyes??), and may go largely ignored.

So, it actually behooves people to do the search...unless they don't mind being ignored.  Sometimes, I just point out that there's another thread on the subject.  No need to scold them.  The search feature's a bit quirky, anyway.

I do see some newbies using the search feature, however.  You can always tell when, suddenly, a thread from last year reappears.

That's pretty good, Musicman.  All those misspellings would never be caught by spell-check.  Of course, that was your point, I guess.

Too bad spell-check doesn't include names of products, such as the ones Nathan mentioned.

I think what happens is that the post goes UNREPLIED TO, rather than unread, or ignored.

People see it, read it, then think.... I already replied to a post about this, then move on.

Still, one hopes to generate replies, but then again, even if you post your "new" rant at the bottom of an existing thread on the same topic, those who've already replied won't reply again anyway.

So, in that sense, you're basically screwed either way.

My solution is for everyone to check with me first whether or not it's OK to post about a particular topic. If it's something I want to rant about, I should get to go first.

But hey, that's just me...

I've been doing that a lot lately.  The wrong there/their the wrong to/too etc.

I never seem to catch it until after I press the send button.

Would you make an exception for Paris Hilton, Jimbo?  I recall we once had twelve threads going concurrently about her.

Or maybe it was Britney*.  I forget.

*I think Britney's parents should've used spell-check when they named her.
