I am a big fan of Masterpiece Mystery and Contemporary so I am very glad to see the Sherlock Holmes, love Martin Freeman's character.

You know, though I don't hate it, I have tried several times to get into Downton Abbey, and it is just "eh," to me.  I really, really wanted to like it, I'm an anglophile, I love period pieces, I love Hugh Bonneville, it is just flat, boring to me.  Who'd a thunk it!Ermm

Yeah, it's funny how certain things appeal to you & certain things don't.

I really enjoy most of the Masterpiece Classic series, but I was the same way with the "Cranford" series as you were with DA. Just couldn't get into it.

Same with "Pride and Prejudice". Not really into Jane Austen at all, but oddly enough, I really enjoyed "Emma".

Also loved the BBC production of "Jane Eyre" a couple of years or so ago. Something I would never have read.

One series that never gets old is Inspector Morse. A true classic.
I thought Inspector Lewis would be a pale imitation, but it's excellent, too.

Downton Abbey also struck me as flat and a bit dull. Which is a shame, because it has the perfect cast.

Lark Rise to Candleford is preferable, to me, as a period piece. It's authentic to the era, but doesn't push itself as beng serious. There's a definite light-heartedness to it that makes it enjoyable without being pure comedy.

I haven't really watched it as much since it moved to TNT, but I agree it's a good show.

Like so many other shows, once I started watching it, NBC decides to cancel it. In all their infinite wisdom, they decided that Jay Leno's 10:00 talk show was actually a good idea. So what do they do? They move Southland from Thursdays at 10, to Fridays at 9, taking away a bit of the show's edge.

And that, folks, is part of the reason NBC can't get out of its own way! Confused

Parks and Recreation is a show that I had pretty much dismissed as being nothing more than a cheap ripoff of "The Office". I had actually begun referring to it as "The Government Office". At the time of it's debute, I had only seen Amy Pohler on SNL & didn't much care for her either.

But I watched the first episode & was sorta.... "Eh.... this'll probably last about a half a season & be gone."

Then I watched the next episode & was of pretty much the same mind, though maybe just a tad less.

Anyway, yadda yadda yadda, now it's one of my favorite shows.

Watch every episode. Great cast, great characters.

And... every episode doesn't have something to do with sex or contain an over abundance of cheesy one-liners every half a minute about having sex, not having sex, wanting sex, getting sex, looking for sex, the inability to find sex, weird sex, kinky sex, juvenile sex, nerd sex, drunken sex, sexy sex, or obsessive sexsexsexsexsexsexsexsexsex!!!!! like just about every other stupid, lame-ass show on TV nowadays relies upon in lieu of actual good writing & story telling.

Awhile back, I started a thread blasting the remake of Hawaii Five-O. I predicted it wouldn't last half a season.

I was wrong about that, obviously. I've watched a few episodes during the past month and I have to say it's actually not bad. Still not wild about the cast, but some of the plot lines are interesting, and it's a beautifully-filmed show, with all that scenery in HD.
Hundreds of threads killed.

I thought Modern Family was going to be a mediocre sitcom but my mom started to love it last year, and I watched one episode and couldn't believe how hilarious it was. Very rarely do I ever laugh out loud at something on TV, even if I do think it's funny, but I laugh out loud at Modern Family pretty often.

I don't really much newer TV shows. I think the dialogue is way too fake and nobody talks like that in real life.

I also don't understand how shows like Blue Bloods, NCIS, and all those other cop shows are so popular. Whenever I see the beginning of an episode and someone gets raped or murdered, I think to myself, "This is so depressing, how do people watch and enjoy this?"

I'd rather watch comedy than depressing stuff.

I've quickly grown addicted to the new Sherlock Holmes also, Jimbo. And the show Finding Your Roots. Fascinating. Wish Holmes was doing more than three shows per season. Cry

(off topic, a little bit...) Just about enough to maybe entice me to donate a little to PBS. Those shows are worth supporting. (and several others) The trouble with donating money to PBS is that I don't think it it possible to firmly designate where my donation goes. That is my also biggest gripe with cable TV companies and labor unions. You can't spend your money "a la carte" on what you actually want. So I buy DVDs or BluRays of the PBS shows I like. That way they get feedback on exactly what I DO like of theirs. Smile

Sorry in advance, but this is one of my little Pet peeves.

PBS really just buys syndication rights to shows made by the BBC (or occasionally ITV, though that hasn't happened recently, I think...). When you buy the DVDs, PBS really doesn't give a hoot or even get informed of it, unless you're buying off their website...can you?

So really, you're supporting the BBC. Quite good, as well, if not better. (My little dig at PBS for being stingy with their time slots for good British/Irish/Scottish/Welsh entertainment...An episode of As time goes By and Keeping up appearances on a saturday night is not enough!)

I love Sherlock...haven't gotten to the new series yet. Moffet is truely an amazing writer and show runner. The changes he's made to Doctor Who really made me respect this show in a way I didn't think possible with the new version.

America's Got Talent. Never ever watched American Idol, and had no interest in all the "news" being reported about it.

But then Howard Stern was appointed a judge- I'm a longtime fan. Also fond of Sharon Osbourne, and I like Howie Mandel. So I gave the show a chance.

Can't believe I'm sitting here watching yet another episode. This stuff does not really excite me, it's Stern's honest approach that makes it interesting. "Stern" he is indeed! Tongue

Maybe it's the combination of judges overall- they rarely all agree, but they aren't bitchy about it (yeah Stuck-Up Simon and Patronizing Paula, I'm looking at you guys.)

The sob stories, for some reason, get a little irritating. Could be that it's because only one act is going to win, so seeing the sob stories piling up.......how this is their #1 dream in life, what they've always been striving for, now this one guy saying he "comes from dirt"............all but one of them are going back to Obscurityville regardless. Cry

Designing Women: I've just started with the #1 release of this from Shout, and 2 episodes in, it's starting to grow on me. Don't know why, but it is.
Perry Mason: This one is more clear-cut; it's because of the teamwork and chemistry between that famous defense attorney and his team. Half a season's worth in on DVD, it's made me start wanting more.

The Nanny.

Up at university, I don't have all the channels in the dorm as I do back home, so whatever I can't watch on VH1 Classic, I make up for by leaving on Nickelodeon in the middle of the night. I find the dialogue and Fran Drescher's actions on the show hilarious.

I tuned into Jerseylicious last year.  Being from NJ, I wanted to see the sights, where it was filmed, etc. (I'd done the same with Jersey Shore).

And then I caught sight of beautician Olivia.

Va-va-voom!  Hubba-hubba!  He-bob-a-re-bob!  Yessiree!  What a dame!

I've watched it a few times since.  I know Olivia loves me.  Doesn't matter that I'm more than twice her age, don't gel my hair, don't wear a fake tan, don't pump myself up with steroids, don't drive a BMW, etc.  I know I'm her dream man.

But then there's that Tracy!  Looks like a damned drag queen.  She's evil, I tell ya! AngryLOL

I take offense to the steroids comment!

People watch to see the bad guys get caught. And even on 'lawyer dramas', they don't usually have them get off on a technicality.

It's long gone now but That '70s Show. Thought it was a gimmicky premise at first but the cast and writing was fantastic. I still love watching the old repeats.

I don't think I have. I'm still fairly new to the show, but I saw the finale, and it really, genuinely made me sad!

Same here, my dad just started watching That 70's Show a couple of minutes ago and it's a genuinely funny and entertaining show. They only mentioned one pop culture reference once in the entire episode. I'm glad they didn't play it like "we're in the 70's look at all the 70's references we have". I was afraid they were going to do that and they never did. Big smile

I never thought I'd like "The Gilmore Girls." I thought it was a chick flick like show. However one night by accident I came across an episode in season 1 called "Cinnamon's Wake." This was about a crazy neighbor (Sally Struthers) who just lost her very overweight orange tabby kitty named Cinnamon. I couldn't stop laughing. I'm a cat person and can relate plus Lauren Grahm is and still is a hottie.
I approve this message.
