It was announced today that a longtime staple of PBS, Sesame Street will move to HBO beginning this fall (Episodes will be aired on PBS nine months after being shown on HBO).

What do you think of this?

Will HBO continue making the pandering condescending sh*t it's been for the past 12-15 years, or will they return it to its roots where it was actually moderately fun to watch for a non-child.

It would be nice if the time slot that will open up by this move would be filled with something worth watching, but given that PBS' daytime schedule is all children's programming, I know it will be filled with some other kiddie show.

I just hope the move doesn't have any negative effect on PBS financially or otherwise.

HBO Sesame Street will go something like this:

Quote

"Hey kids!  We'll be right back after these fun ED and condom commercials!"
"Elmo want the blue pill!"

This morning Bloomberg reported that the number of people "cutting the cord" INCREASED by 625,000 these last three months. I'm wondering if this is a desparation move by both PBS (which has received less government funding) and HBO (read the report by Bloomberg) to procure the extra money they want.

On the other hand, they can move Barney and Friends over to HBO WITH MY BLESSINGS!!! LOL

A television staple for young people moving to a pay per view channel?
Bad idea, now only the rich kids will benefit.

I think they stopped playing Sesame Street on PBS years ago. Moving it to HBO is stupid. Kids actually learn from it and enjoy doing so. We need more forms of accessible education, not less. This move will just make millions of children dumber.

I haven't heard anything about Sesame Street on HBO. What I do know is that Sesame Street is going from 1 hour, where it's been since 1969, to 30 minutes running time.

I guess that's my motivation to preserve these rare final 1 hour broadcasts and final afternoon half hour of Sesame Street on videotape.
PC: Hey, Mac! Windows 10 is out! And it's not going to have any of the problems that Windows 8 had! Trust me!

Mac: Where have I heard that before?...

Amen. These days, I would be surprised if some kids didn't know what a TV is because they are glued to some Kindle Fire or iPad.

Very dumb move. But obviously, the attention spans of kids these days is next to none, and a 60-minute version of Sesame Street would make more than a few 3-year-olds doze off nowadays.
BTW, it's not "Sesame Street" anymore, at least the past 15-20 years. It's "The Elmo Show." They give most of the airtime to that stupid red puppet and his "world," INSTEAD of Ernie/Bert, Big Bird, Oscar, Telly, Baby Bear, Zoe, etc. Maybe Kermit the Frog should come back for a change.

Maybe PBS didn't have enough funding money to keep the 60-minute Sesame Street on that network. Obviously, every single PBS member station devotes 12 hours/day to "BEG TO KEEP _______ ON YOUR PBS STATION! DONATE NOW!" I only watch PBS for an occasional Nova or Antiques Roadshow.

Whereas I have no children and I'm not 5 it has little effect on me.

I was a fan of the muppets even as an adult in the 1980's when Jim Henson was still alive.
He was a very warm and funny guy and made Kermit and the rest of his characters really funny.
Once he passed, it was all fairly vanilla to me.

Now the muppets are owned by Disney, so who really cares about them now?

^Back before I had cable, when Henson was still alive, I would watch the Muppets.
There weren't a lot of choices back then.
Good wholesome humor that is well done, I liked the old guys in the balcony. Big smile

As I recall, the Muppets got pretty raunchy on a regular basis.

Miss Piggy tried to rape a gay guy in one of the Christmas specials.

Was that the raunchy Lady Gaga special?  And as for the Muppets being adult oriented,  there is a Muppets tv show on ABC this fall. Miss Piggy and Kermit the Frog got divorced, btw.

The Muppet Show always was adult oriented, just in the "family show" way where the adult stuff was subtle and had to be seen by adult eyes to be understood.

I'll give the new show a chance. I gave the Clangers revival a chance and that turned out okay.

Heh. HBO is currently in talks to bring back Deadwood in movie form, and they're getting Sesame Street now too. Can't wait for Al Swearengen to stop by Sesame Street...
