It's quite clear no reality show is 100% "real" and that elements are scripted or staged to make things exciting. The problem is, what's being said sounds transparently fake. A few examples...

-I've found myself watching is "Pawn Stars" on History Channel. It's actually entertaining and informative, except when someone brings in a historic item, Rick (the co-owner) gives a long explanation that sounds like it's straight from Wikipedia. I have a hard time believing this guy is a walking library, and really just see the producers finding everything they can right before the camera starts rolling.

The other thing that annoys me about this show is at the very end, there's always a scene related to an item brought into the shop. In one episode, it was a classic Shelby Cobra, which they all took to the race track. The "Old Man" (Rick's father) insists on driving first to show everyone how it's done...except he doesn't get any higher than 25 MPH. Everytime I see these tag scenes, I think I'm watching an 80s sitcom and wait for someone to deliver that final punchline, prompting audience laughter, applause, and a "Sit, Ubu, sit...good dog!"

-One of the other shows I like is "Man vs. Food", although Adam Richman can be a little grating. One episode had him taking on a big pancake challenge, and a customer came up to him and said "If you finish that plate, we're gonna change the name to 'Man-cakes'!" No, just no.

I get that it's all for laughs, but it's very unnatural, forced, and a little insulting to the intelligence. It's the same reason I hate "Operation Repo"...if you want to exaggerate real events, fine. But don't have me believe some guy in a ninja costume confronted one of these guys, especially if you want to call your show "reality"...

I read the title of the thread, and immediately thought "Operation Repo".  Soooo fake.

But sometimes the phoniness of reality shows is accomplished in another way.  I read an article about it once.  They'll film many hours of the reality stars, and only use the footage that fits in with the story line they want to present.  For instance, they'll create a "war" between two members by editing out all the footage in which there's obviously no war going on, and only use the footage which supports the premise they want.

I watched Black Gold once or twice, and the number of hissy fits the guys working on the rig got involved in with each other, seemed unnatural.  I guess the producers think it can't be a reality show if no one hates each other, and so they set out to create all that drama queen stuff.

I think on some level I'd prefer more of the fights than the muckety muck where there is something going wrong and it all works its self out by the end of the show and everyone is all lovey dovey.  Let's say for instance in the poor Sinbad reality show (I love Sinbad by the way, he is one of my favorite all time comedians).  When he moved in with his exwife.  At the beginning of the show the ex-wife was all mad about him bringing all of his junk to her house, and somehow, someway by the end of the show, they were all la de dah and everything's fine.  Now, I don't know about most people, but I hardly EVER am able to resolve all of my issues with my family in a week, sometimes not even in a month, but I can not see that they wouldn't have the issue of all of his junk figured out prior to him getting to her house.  I mean really...

WinkThe only 'reality shows' I care to watch allow me to enjoy a 'touch of terror' with a bunch of complete hilarious stupidity, knowing it is SO bad it can be nothing BUT real. These are the shows that exploit those that have no reason other than pure luck, as far as remaining alive.
Canada's Worst Driver and Canada's Worst Handyman are perfect examples.
Watch, starting at 20:51 into this episode, for a few minutes (although I'm POSITIVE that much of this portion HAD to be controlled, given downtown Toronto):

Anyone who thinks that reality TV is "real" probably thought that all of the jokes on "Hollywood Squares" were ad-libbed, too. Ermm

I just read an article on Slate.com that they just found out after about a dozen years that House Hunters on HGTV is scripted.  I used to watch it all of the time.  They did a very good jobs because the people looking for a house sound about as dumb as a box of rocks and always want more house than they can buy.  Oh yeah, they always make a joke about the woman getting the closets.

A new study finds that people who are chipper & happy live longer. Which is surprising because people who aren't chipper & happy want to kill people who are always chipper & happy. David Letterman

Yeah it made them seem more like a bunch of runway models than oil field roughnecks. I'll bet one of those drama queens once held up the show by refusing to come out of his trailer because his boots made him look fat. LOL
