Guitarist and founding member of Lynyrd Skynyrd, Gary Rossington has died at the age of 71.

The last surviving member of the original band, his was the signature slide guitar in "Free Bird".

And though I was never really a fan, RIP Mr. Free Bird.

RIP to him.

Freebird "flew" off my radar for years (as anything other than a punchline i.e., "play Freebird!") for years until I watched the final scene of Rob Zombie's movie Devil's Rejects. It gave it a whole new life for me. Such a great song, especially the intro.

I also remember the Rossington Collins Band, though I know nothing of their music.

My first thought was... those guys appear to have had poor dental hygiene habits. šŸ¤”

But not the chick, of course.

The chick was hot.

Movie chicks are always hot.

With perfect, straight, shiny white teeth.

Though she might hang out with filthy, greasy looking trash bags who look like they hadn't bathed or brushed their teeth in a year, she looks fresh as a daisy.

OK, maybe a daisy that's been stepped on a few times, but still...

We all know that any chick who would hang out with dudes like those two would almost certainly have more of a resemblance to this....

...and that's even stretching credulity for those two.

That's one of the reasons why I don't watch movies or modern TV shows anymore.

SOS.

It's sad when even a "rebel" filmmaker like Rob Zombie has to rely on the same old Hollywood gimmickery to make his movies sellable.

And I won't even get into the glorification of violence and its apparent effect on society.

That would be too much Debbie Downerism even for this topic.

Sorry...

They were around for a very short while in the early 80's.

Probably trying to rekindle the success of Skynyrd.

I was looking through some pictures on Google yesterday and saw a few of RCB on stage, both of them wearing this t-shirt...

But this is the only pic of it I can find now.

I guess it was a tongue-in-cheek acknowledgement that Rossington's name was more well known than Collins'.

I think this was their one big hit, which I now remember....

Good song, really.

Allen Collins became permanently paralyzed from the waist down in 1986 after he ran his car off the road into a ditch, killing his girlfriend.

Interestingly, the accident happened on Jan. 29, just one day after the Space Shuttle Challenger exploded after taking off from the Kennedy Space Center on Jan. 28.

He died four years later in 1990 at the age of 37.

Rock-n-roll.

Reminds me of Beck, Bogert and Appice. Who the hell was Bogert?

I should probably give both of the bands a listen. Don't know anything by either of them.

Sucks about Collins, though.

The chick in the Rob Zombie movie is his wife, Sheri Moon. Must be in her 50s by now.

I posted an RIP thread on another forum and one of the guys who's a long time resident of the area, posted this 1977 live version of LS doing Freebird at The Oakland Coliseum about three months before the plane crash that killed the lead singer Ronnie Van Zant and some others...

I almost always prefer the studio version (with a few exceptions), but that was pretty good. Sad that a few months later...

I don't think I saw one girl in a full blouse.

Towards the end, you'll see probably the only black guy in the audience.

I read the the lead singer and I guess defacto leader of the band, Ronnie, could be a real dyed in the wool, world class a--hole. Especially when he was drinking. Which was apparently much of the time.

He told an interviewer from some rock magazine (Creem I think) that he didn't expect to live very long, though I doubt he was thinking in terms of going out in a plane crash. Probably figured he'd go out like Hendrix, passed out dead drunk and choking on his own vomit.

Quote But a drunk Van Zant was a world class asshole. Once he broke a few of Rossingtonā€™s fingers after a show in Hamburg, Germany in October 1975 for no particular reason (this was after heā€™d smashed a bottle over a roadieā€™s head no less): "He turned on Gary and said: 'You think youā€™re a guitar player? Iā€™ll do it without you,ā€™ā€ tour manager Craig Reed recalled to Uhelszki years later. ā€œMaybe he missed a lick,ā€ he continued. ā€œBut it didnā€™t matter if he messed up or not. If Ronnie wanted to kick your ass he would. He was mean. He used to say to us, 'When Iā€™ve been drinking Iā€™m nobodyā€™s friend.ā€™ā€

The man was self-aware something awful ā€” a characteristic that at once allowed him to become a stunningly relatable songwriter and storyteller, but one that by '76 had him speaking liberally, drunkenly about the impending end of Lynyrd Skynrd and his own life: ā€œI donā€™t even expect to live very long,ā€ he told Uhelszki, ā€œbecause Iā€™m living too fast.ā€

Ronnie seemed to relish the certainty that rock and roll would eventually kill him. For someone so hellbent on achieving that dream in the first place, itā€™d only be fitting to meet the same fate Robert Johnson agreed to at the crossroads; for someone so hellbent on being the man of his fatherā€™s dreams, death at the hands of the thing he chose over finishing school would be the only suitable punishment. This is beyond stupid, beyond childish, beyond egomaniacal, especially considering all Van Zant had done to dig himself into the petulant, unsatisfied hole he found himself in by the mid-70s.

There are quite a few interesting stories I read this morning about these guys.

Like how they knew there was something wrong with the plane they were flying in because on the previous flight, they could see flames in the engine. Most of them were going to get a different ride for the next leg of the trip, but Van Zant talked them into taking the plane saying "If it's your time to go, you're going to go anyway".

I don't think I'd have liked the guy at all.

No, not such a great guy. I 've heard such things about musicians I like. I can't let it bother me.

Hell, if I thought Chuck Manson's music was any good, I'd still be listening to it today.

I've never particularly liked Skynyrd music anyway, so not as much of a conflict for me.

Their songs were always just a bit too redneck for my tastes.

Maybe because I grew up around people like that.

At 9:40, you'll see the one black guy in attendance. šŸ˜„

Didn't see any Confederate flags in the crowd, tho. Only on stage.

Maybe that's because it was in California where I'm guessing the Confederate flag is not such a popular expression of "cultural heritage".

Might've been a few swastikas or iron crosses that just weren't shown.

For being rednecks, Ronnie at least seemed to be liberal on some issues. Today's Skynyrd, which is a glorified tribute band, his brother Johnny is the frontman, and he's a Desantis Supporter.

Some people find "Sweet Home Alabama" racist, as the lyrics mentioned George Wallace in a positive light.
