    Posted: 23 Aug 2018 at 7:22pm
Ed King, the former Strawberry Alarm Clock guitarist who joined Lynyrd Skynyrd in 1972 to give the Southern rock group its iconic three-guitar sound, died Wednesday in Nashville. He was 68. A cause of death was not specified, though King had been battling lung cancer and had recently been hospitalized for the disease.

RIP Ed.

I dunno who all those guys in the Lynyrd Skynrd pic are, but the one seated in the center of the pic sure looks like Dennis Dunaway, the bassist from Alice Cooper.

Here's Dunaway:

Anyway, RIP, Ed.

The guy you're talking about is Gary Rossington.

Thanks for posting this RIP, Jimbo.  I just saw the news story.  I'm not a huge Lynyrd Skynyrd fan, but I know their most popular songs and appreciate their contribution to 'Southern Rock'.  Ed King co-wrote "Sweet Home Alabama" and is famous for his countdown 1-2-3 and the iconic guitar lick that begins that song.  Ed King had left the band in 1977 before the tragic plane crash which killed three LS members, but rejoined for a reunion tour.

RIP Mr. King.  Cry

Re: the mention of and the little "dig" they take at Neil Young during SHA, I always figured that there must've been a little bad blood between them and him.

Then, a few years ago I read the authorized biography of NY entitled "Shakey", in which the subject was covered.

Turns out, Young and some of the guys who would later form Skynyrd, had done session work together back in the mid 60's before any of them were famous. The little dig at Young was just a good natured poke at an old friend.

Neil Young loved it. Heard it and laughed. Thought it was great.

This is the location at 106 S. Main St. in Jonesboro, Georgia, where they posed for that first album cover in 1972, as it appears today...

That's great!  Thanks for sharing that info; I haven't read that book.  A lot of PR hate among musicians and singers is made up for ratings.

Yeah, I always just thought it was Skynyrd's response to the lyrics of Southern Man.

Am I the only one who thought LS got their name from Allan Sherman's early 60s novelty hit Hello Mudduh, Hello Fadduh?

You remember Leonard Skinner
He got Ptomaine poisoning last night after dinner

The reference was actually about two songs. Another song by Young simply titled Alabama was the initial reference when they sang:

"I heard Mr Young sing about her

I heard ol' Neil put her down"

In a high school english class, we were assigned to write a two page paper that compared and contrasted any subject of our choosing. Two things that were similar and opposite. I did mine on Neil Young's Alabama and Skynyrd's Sweet Home Alabama.

I remember that song. A friend mine had a few of his albums. Or his parents did, actually. I borrowed them for a couple of months back in high school.

LS very well could have been inspired by that song, although I think it's pretty well established that there was, as they claimed, a PE teacher at the high school they attended named Leonard Skinner.

My favorite song by Allan Sherman was:

It took me awhile to appreciate Skynard, but it was the guitar trio lead by King that did it. Thanks & RIP...

Interesting info re Young's relationship with Skynyrd.  I'm kinda glad and disappointed at the same time that it wasn't as acrimonious as it sounded.
