    Posted: 02 May 2015 at 12:27am
The MDA Announced today there will be no longer hold a Telethon on Labor Day Weekend.

I used to remember when Jerry Lewis's Telethon RULED over all other Telethons, NOBODY even raised HALF as much money as his did. Then in 1988 an upstart Telethon hosted by Marie Osmond and Merlin Oleson, The Children's Miracle Network did the Impossible, it PASSED Jerry's Telethon! Shocked For the next several years during the late 1980s and early 1990s these two "slugged it out, and it was fun to see which one raised more money, but then the telethon for Jerry's Kids began to falter, making the Children's Miracle Network the dominant leader.

Post Away, my Friends!

I didn't even know it was still going on.  I remember once wishing I'd watched it after I found out that the band X had appeared.  But that was like 30-35 years ago.

The word "Telethon" is a combination of the words "Television" and "Marathon".

A combination or two words like that is called a portmanteau.

I'm smaaaaart!!!! Approve

Great news guys.... With the Air Hawk, flat balls are no longer a problem!!!

This is devastating. The Jerry Lewis Telethon WAS Labor Day to millions of viewers. People who didn't care about tennis (US Open) went to Jerry Lewis to watch the guests and see the tote go up and up. Sunday night into Monday morning (most stations in the 70s/80s did air the whole 22 hours) when all the other network affiliates signed off for the evening, your market's "Love Network" affiliate stayed on all night with Jerry Lewis and Ed McMahon.
The "Show of Spirit" that followed which was 6 and then 3 and then 2 hours was nothing compared to the 22 hours of wackiness that aired throughout the country from the late 60s onward.
Obviously, the MDA thinks with 300 channels on TV nowadays, the telethon is unneeded because there is way more to watch on Labor Day than a bunch of people begging you to donate to help Jerry's Kids.

And as a tribute, I give you these two YouTube videos. The first is a compilation of "You'll Never Walk Alone"'s, sung by Jerry every year after the final tote.

And then, the final totes for each year from 1976-2010. Notice 1984 how there were THREE final totes, and 2000 they did it manually with volunteers flipping the numbers because the toteboard sign did not work. Of course in 2008 we hit $65,031,393...the highest tote ever for that telethon. Wonder how much of that $65 mil + went to Jerry's Kids, and how much went to pockets of big wigs.

The telethon should have been cancelled when Jerry was put out to pasture in 2010.  I remember when it ran on the local ABC station every year until sometime in the 80s or 90s.  I think WGN did run the telethon for a while for those markets that didn't carry it anymore.

I used to watch it every year with my mother until they ousted Jerry Lewis. He MADE the telethon, in my opinion. They had some really good talent, some very touching tales of what the foundation has done for people afflicted with the family of diseases that benefited from the funds. Cried every year and always contributed what I could.

I watched the last 21.5 hr telethon (2010) live on WGN America, the Sunday night before Labor Day. I shut it off after they reached a couple million and watched the rest the next day via KAPP-35, Yakima's ABC station (and Love Network station) because WGN America had a Cubs game when the final tote was announced. That tote was $58,919,838 and it was a little sad to hear Jerry's voice crack up when he sang "You'll Never Walk Alone."
I got really annoyed with a lot of Love Network stations...some only airing 8 hours of the telethon, skipping all of the late night and morning portions. I lived in Seattle at the time and was on vacation in Yakima, but Q13 Fox (KCPQ) was the Love Network station there, and the show went on from 9AM-5PM...no Sunday night, no Monday morning...obviously summer Fox repeats of Family Guy/Simpsons, paid programming and the morning news was more profitable.

Man, it must of been an extraordinary show, what a loss!
One good thing about TV-you could always turn it off

In the Daytona Beach/New Smyrna Beach area on Labor Day Firemen would stand at traffic intersections with a Boot and a sign that read "Fill this boot for Jerry's Kids".

This marks the end of an era. Cry

Five will get you ten this year at the intersections there will be some bums holding a boot and a sign saying "Help the Homeless", namely themselves! Angry

PS When the Children's Miracle Network Telethon surpassed the Jerry Lewis Telethon for the first time in 1988 Marie Osmond CLS-SL and Merlin Olesin CLS-SL received My 1988 Little (Stinkers) of the Year Award and their Charity got my Inaugural 1988 @$$-Kickers of the Year Award. Thumbs Up

BTW one of the CMN Poster Children for 1988 was one of three who got my Inaugural 1987 Little (Stinkers) of the year, Alvaro Garza Jr - CLS SL. (The other two were Cicilia Cichen CLS-SL and Jessica McClure CLS-SL). Cool
