Remember when it was said that local news sets are boring nowadays? Not only do I agree with that, but also believe that the openings of local newscasts these days are just as boring and have no life compared to what came before. Case in point: this 1989 6 P.M. opening of WPLG Eyewitness News in Miami had the late, great Ernie Anderson announcing it, and what I really liked about it is how he billed the anchors within that opening (of course, it has been said that he was even better in NYC and L.A. doing Eyewitness News in those markets on WABC and KABC respectively).

Most intros to news shows rarely last more than 10 seconds.  Why get so anal over something so trivial?  Nobody turns on the news just for that...   Ermm

I actually LIKE the current WFSB Eyewitness News open. I also LIKE the current music too! A step up to what they has before!

You guys got me going down memory lane, here's the intro and outro from WPRI circa 99 (this format only lasted at most four years before reverting back to the 'eyewitness news' style')

Although not a news bumper, the early 90's WNET id was rather spiffy as well (recall seeing it after Shining Time Station

Nowadays, everything has to be flashy and full of graphics. Because if they don't, no one will watch the news. It's all about those small attention spans!
I hate watching the news and seeing the logo bug change every 10 seconds. Doesn't that get annoying? All of those whooshes and sound effects get on my nerves as well. Give us the news, not the newest flashy graphic!
I do like when stations have nice sets. KIMA Yakima is a very bad example...two HDTVs displaying the ACTION NEWS logo and a blue bare wall. Looks like a middle school announcement program.
KNDO/KNDU upgraded this week to a brand new set that looks nice, with the NBC logo in the background...and room for 4 anchors. KIMA only has room for 2 or 3, and it's always one anchor every night. It makes the Seattle stations look like mini CNN's.
Sick and tired of Charter Spectrum (and Flo!)

Yep.  Visual and auditory overload.  Shepard Smith's set looks like a spaceship.  It used to be just the cable news channels, but it's infiltrated local news, too.

What could be more appropriate for Shepard Smith than a Spaceship, given some of his outlandish behavior?

It probably IS a spaceship.

Probably the same one he arrived on and lives in.
Great news guys.... With the Air Hawk, flat balls are no longer a problem!!!

the graphics that go with the storys sometimes crack me up. Like there was one recently about someone getting abused or attacked and the graphic shown next to the anchors head was of flashing police lights, yellow tape and a giant fist punching out of the middle of it  LOL

There was a veteran news anchor who's now in News Heaven. Her name was Ann Bishop and she used to be on Channel 13 Eyewitness News back in the day when Jerry Turner was the lead anchor and a Baltimore institution. Do you remember Ms. Bishop? Anyway way back in the day (early/mid 60's) The Eyewitness news theme was from 007 movies From Russia with Love and Thunderball. Now that was the way to open a news show. However TV news intros/themes permanently Jumped The Shark in the 70's when they adopted the generic Pablum they have today. Crap created in labs on computer. And the NBC National News had some kick ass music by Henry Mancini. WPVI Channel 6 in Philly still holds on to their venerable theme thats decades old but nothing beats James Bond Music and Henry Mancini for News themes when news was news, professionally reported and not a slanted bully pulpit and helmet head lipstick and legs blondes who's claim to fame were beauty contests and on their knee duty in back rooms. I wouldn't be surprised if News intros of the future are drivel dreck croaked out by hipster chicks with extreme warble vocal fry voices. Nuke

^Oh man I would kill to see clips of the Henry Mancini NBC News Music and the openings with the James Bond music! Doesn't anybody have them? The James Bond theme is one my favorites!

These were two different themes. In the late 70's Henry Mancini composed the theme to the NBC nightly news. I believe its on You Tube. When I have more time I'll try to find and post. Mancini also did the music for NBC's Election result specials around 1980.

For the old Eyewitness News theme you can find it on the Bond film; From Russia With Love. The scene about mid to late in the film where Bond and the girl are running/escaping from I believe an underground explosion. And there's another version of this in Thunderball at the end during the underwater diver fights and when the speed boat is gaining on a solid rock in the ocean. Hope this helps.

KGO in san Francisco, as well as other ABC owned and operated stations, used a version of the 'Cool Hand Luke' cattle-drive music. Local news has not been the same since they dropped that theme.

Though I was never around when WEWS had this for a news commercial...

It looks FAR entertaining than what's on today!

I miss the olden days when the intro music for news shows always made you think of a morse code message being sent. The doot do doot doot do doot doot do doot music. For bonus points little did kids know the anchor was also sometimes Bozo The Clown or whoever was hosting the kids show earlier in the day. Most younger people probably wouldn't know what morse code is since the only people who use it anymore are probably either the army or really old school HAM radio operators.
