Hate to say this, but it's proven that most female cops (at least on the beat) can't come close to matching the prowess of a male cop. They just aren't as strong or as quick as men. It's not their fault, but it's a fact.

England has been actively pushing for more and more women cops on the beat. But it is common practice over there for most all females to have a male partner. Having a two female team is unheard of. Again, not women's fault, but male criminals tend to need male officers to match their strength and stamina and ability. Having women on the force is actually a liability, but no one actually has the guts to say so, because, you know GIRL POWER and all that.

Also, in the police and firefighters and armed forces, the standards to get in have been drastically reduced because most women just couldn't hack it. So, since we all KNOW that we NEED women in those professions, let's just lower our qualifications for life saving jobs!

Having said all that, that applies mainly to the physical part of the job. Women may do just fine as detectives or at desk jobs. I don't know.

Depends on their size and weight.

If I was a patrol cop and got partnered with a petite gal who was about 5'4" and weighed about 125 lbs, I'd be very nervous and hope that they assigned us to some safe, quiet, upscale neighborhood where we weren't likely to get into physical confrontations with 200+ lb rednecks, bikers, drunks and meth heads.

Otoh, if she was around 5'10" and weighed around 170 - 200 lbs, was very strong, athletic and worked out a lot, including doing stuff like boxing, kick boxing and martial arts, I would have no problem whatsoever.

A gal like that could handle herself just fine against your average street slob.

I can attribute part of this post written by commercialsuck to the fact it was written at 2:19 a.m., a time when distorted thinking runs rampant.  But in all fairness, I actually do agree with some of what was said.  Women certainly don't have the strength of their male counterparts, but as far as stamina...I think women can hold their own in that department.  I believe women have the right to the same jobs as men, as long as they can actually do that job.  A woman being a cop, yeah, she will have some limitations.  But as a detective I think she would excel.  Women as a whole are better able to pick up on subtle signs, pay attention to details, can sort through a myriad of "clues" and get to the facts.
I could go on but I think my point has been made and AGAIN, I've gone totally off topic.  I am so bad about that...sorry!

Sorry, but I would change the word 'better' to 'equally', as I don't think there is any empirical scientific data to support the contention that they have superior abilities in those areas.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I've never seen or heard anything to suggest that.

And as I said above, if a woman has the size and weight and keeps herself strong, fit and hones her fighting and self defense skills, there's no reason why she couldn't be the equal of all but the biggest and baddest of the male cops.

From an article at www.scientificamerican.com
"The findings lend support to the view that males may excel at motor skills, while women may be better at integrating analysis and intuitive thinking."
Like you said, it's not empirical scientific proof, but studies have been done.  The study applies to whole genders in general, although individuals can vary widely.   But I really think men and women are wired differently.

If there have been studies that suggest it, then it does lend support to the theory.

Of course, it's probably more often attributable to individual traits.

But I am reminded of the ITV/PBS series from a few years ago called The Bletchley Circle, based on the true story of a group of WWll era, top-secret British female code breakers who were tasked with deciphering encoded Nazi communications and greatly aided the allied war effort. After the war (this part is where the fiction begins) they get back together and team up to solve a series of murders in 1952, post-war London.
