'I've never worn a leash'

Great, and when you get hit by a car I guess it’s all good because you’re country. I don’t even know what these ads are for. Each one is from the “perspective” of a different, ah, thing... shoes, hands, a dog... I don’t even know what they’re about, except they’re about the country. The one with the dog has the leash comment, obviously, and she also says she’s not a pet, she’s a member of the family. Then she says, “I’ve never worn a leash, just like my master”. So your family member is your “master”? Make up your mind, mutt-mutt. And why would the guy ever be wearing a leash anyway? I don't get it.

'1 less'

I HATE the stupid ads for “1 less” cervical cancer shots. Someone is making money off of this, there are probably risks invovled and the risk of the cancer is probably being exaggerated and could be decreased in other ways like say with a good diet. These ads just bug me. “Tell someone, be one less, get your daughter the shot”. It’s about money, it’s not a public health ad like it pretends to be.

I posted about this here some time ago.
If I remember correctly there was a lie told on those commercials.
If I wasn't so lazy, I'd look it up.

Okay, I've never seen the first ad you're talking about, and I have no idea what it has to do with the other ad, and in regards to that one, I'm not sure what your problem is. If you don't like the ad, that's one thing - but your statements/surmises about the HPV vaccine and the relation to cervical cancer are just . . . well, kind of ignorant. (Unfortunately the site I would turn to for all my information on this subject is offline until Monday, so bear with me here. But rest assured I check all my sources for accuracy and impartiality.) First off, I've had the vaccine, and I read through all the paperwork they gave me, and I can tell you that the risks associated with the vaccine itself are minimal - personally, I had no problem with it, and I HATE needles. But I asked for it, because I read up on this stuff, and it's that damn important. And a "good diet" won't do sh*t for that, I'm sorry. I'm going to let the American Social Health Association do the talking now, because they explain it better than I can:

Why are HPV vaccines important?

  • Most sexually active adults (ages 15 to 49) will acquire HPV at some time in their lives and will never even know it. HPV usually has no symptoms and does not cause disease.
  • Some types of HPV can infect a woman's cervix and cause the cells to change. Most of the time, HPV goes away on its own. When HPV is gone, the cervix cells go back to normal. But sometimes, HPV does not go away. Instead, it lingers (persists) and continues to change the cells on a woman's cervix. These cell changes can lead to cancer over time, if they are not treated. 1
  • Cervical cancer is caused by "high-risk" types of genital human papillomavirus (HPV), a common sexually transmitted infection (6.2 million new cases each year). 2
  • Cervical cancer is the 11th most common cancer among women in the US; an estimated 9,710 new cases will occur in 2006 and about 3,700 women will die. 3,4
  • Widespread vaccination has the potential to reduce cervical cancer deaths around the world by as much as two-thirds.5
  • HPV vaccines could reduce anxieties and health care costs associated with following up abnormal Pap and HPV tests, such as biopsies and invasive procedures.6

What HPV vaccines are available, and what's in the pipeline?

  • Merck developed a 3-dose (0, 2 & 6 months) quadrivalent vaccine for men and women to be marketed under the name Gardasil(r). The vaccine is close to 100% efficacious for preventing persistent infection and clinical disease associated with HPV type 6 & 11 (subtypes associated with 90% of all genital warts) and types 16 &18 (subtypes associated with 70% of all cervical cancers, and many vulvar and vaginal cancers).7

(Bright red emphasis mine.) There's more on that site if you're interested, but that's a pretty good overview. I should also note that since it's located on the cervix, which is not particularly visible or accessible, cervical cancer is hard to detect, with very few symptoms, if any. And you may have recently heard on the news that 1 in 4 teenage girls has an STD - well, that includes HPV.

My point is, if you don't like an ad, that's one thing, that's why this forum is here. But as for uninformed medical statements . . . not so much.

The ads are for Tractor Supply Company a chain of stores that sells stuff to farmers and hicks. And I'm sorry but I just can't get behind advocating irresponsible pet ownership especially since one of my friends worked in an animal shelter and is in school to become a veterinarian and another knows somebody whose kid got attacked by a stray dog.

The first time I ever ventured into the wilds of Oakland, California, I was shocked and dismayed by the packs of abandoned dogs roaming the streets.  They seemed to be everywhere...but hey, that's Oakland.  Gang Central, where animals of the canine sort don't differ that much from animals of the human sort.

Other than that, I like seeing dogs running around off-leash.  Went gold-mining in the hills of Northern California yesterday with a friend and his two dogs.  The dogs were free to run wherever they wanted.  They couldn't have been happier.

So, I think there's a difference between dogs owned by "farmers and hicks", and dogs living in cities.  In cities, dogs (like people) require more control.  In more rural areas, dogs (like people)...not so much.

Ok, good night sleep, gave up some apathy.

My issue was with MANDATING children to be immunized.  Texas and Virginia were the first states to give into Merck lobbyists.  If the pathogen is not airborne, why should there be public mandates?

Last year I looked into Gardasil (I guess this may not be 1less..my god what annoying jingle)
http://www.news-medical.net/?id=22085
Quote "Because Merck only studied Gardasil in fewer than 1200 girls under age 16 in pre-licensure trials, it is critical that doctors and parents be made aware of the nature of the initial adverse event reports coming into VAERS and that they report serious health problems after vaccination when they occur," said NVIC President Barbara Loe Fisher. "There are twice as many children collapsing and four times as many children experiencing tingling, numbness and loss of sensation after getting a Gardasil vaccination compared to those getting a Tdap (tetanus-diphtheria-acellular pertussis) vaccination. There have been reports of facial paralysis and Guillain-Barre Syndrome. And doctors who give Gardasil in combination with other vaccines are basically conducting an experiment on their young patients because Merck has not published any safety data for simultaneous vaccination with any vaccine except hepatitis B vaccine."

Then just don't move to your neighbor state, Connecticut, where daughters can have abortions without their parents' permission.

The whole 'forced shot' fiasco makes me think Merck would like us all to believe they've got the answer to the 'next polio'. We all had certain required shots when we went to school; shot records were required. Holy Cow! If Merck can make this 'vaccination' mandetory, well...it's a ticket to the 'big-time' and a fat retirement for some.

Almost Orwellian, eh?
From MY perspective, TEXAS is one of the very most f-d up states; state and local government 'sell out' so easily; and it is quite rare that one can see where what government does is in the best interests of the constituents...and 4 of our 5 offspring have yet to come to their senses (we keep hoping) and still live in that God-forsaken sh*thole that calls itself a 'state'...

Ok, I retract the “diet” thing, I had a bad feeling about that statement as I typed it. It’s just that there’s so much focus on drugs in this country and not real prevention. But ok, I was wrong about that comment.

I still say these ads are about money while they pretend to be all caring about womens’ health, and I am highly suspicious of the whole thing. And that song is bloody annoying.

I understand that people are having trouble with the idea of forced immunization, and I appreciate your response - I hadn't considered the effect of having the Gardasil (they are the 1 less people) given at the same time as other required vaccinations. (Being in my 20s, that wasn't an issue for me.) There are other vaccines in the works for HPV as well, so that will hopefully help with the pricing. On Monday I'll check that website (damn their inconvenient "spring-cleaning"!) and see what else I find. Part of the reason I get a little defensive of this shot is that there were people who, when it came out, were telling people not to give it to their daughters because, you know, good girls don't get cervical cancer, and if we give them this vaccine they'll think it's a license to sleep with their entire class or something. And that was just ridiculous. (Focus on the Family was one of those groups - they've since changed their stance, telling parents that they can use the vaccine as an opportunity to talk to their daughters about God's plan for their sexuality, and I say more power to 'em. It's not my thing, but I'm glad they've 'seen the light', as it were. They still oppose making it mandatory.) I'm all for waiting a while before making it mandatory, there are still a lot of things to be worked out. But it's definitely an exciting moment in women's health*.

*IIRC, Gardasil is also approved for men, but since the effects of HPV are much worse for women they're starting there.

One less ads really piss me off. Sure, no one wants cancer. And sure, it's a great idea and women should have it done.
But number one, don't tell me what to do, because I get immunized on my own agenda and I don't need people harping at me to get yet another shot. It's already ridiculous that Texas is forcing girls to get it at age 10- they're most likely not sexually active yet. They don't need it until they are.
Number two, they're all acting like they're so happy to get the shot.  But unlike most vaccines, Gardasil freaking hurts like HELL. It burned and my muscles tensed up and the needle got bigger each time. It was horrible. I was just starting to get over my fear of needles too.

Sorry to hear you had trouble with the shots . . . one thing I do want to point out, though is that they're giving the shots young because girls need it before they become sexually active for it to prevent it. And it would be awesome if everybody in the world went to their doctors and said "I'm about to become sexually active, please advise", but it doesn't seem to happen that way very much. Also, if there's a standard age, it prevents parents from putting it off "until next year" because their baby girl is too young . . . until she's 25.
