The political atmosphere is making me so angry,
I've decided not to engage in any more political discussion,
on this board or elsewhere, until after the election.

If you catch me responding in such a discussion on this board, gently remind me to stay out of it.

I am very very very tired of responding to the same flimsy arguments, rumors and outright lies about my Presidential choice. I'm not going to do it anymore.

Nathan, I'm with you! Politics sucks! I'll be glad when this dog and pony show of an election is over.

I never discuss politics with anyone - not even my husband - because it just gets too damn aggravating and life is just too damn short.

I applaud your decision, Nathan.

P.S. - Do you really expect a GENTLE reminder from this crowd? Now THAT'S funny!

I too, find myself totally shutting down when finding myself entering into this current political discussion......even with my sig other.  I simply get too angry.  Or maybe I should say "passionate".

I refuse to be baited.  In the end, it's my own private decision and I find that so much more empowering than spouting my so called "knowledge" of each political platform.

Good move Nathan.

Politics is a time bomb.
Is does me no good to discuss it.
The tool who works here insists on bringing it up all the time.
I have to remind her that it is rude to push your views on folk who do not care to hear them.

This is what I have been saying all along........(too bad I cannot link to my posts from last year to prove my point). Did you notice how few posts I have made here in the last month?

Debating politics accomplishes nothing. A person is foolish to think that they can change another's opinion on political topics, especially on an internet forum. If anything, it is only going to make your opponent stronger in their opinion. Think about it- when you continuously hear an opposing viewpoint, does it really sway your opinion in that direction, or does it make you want you to push your viewpoint to counter it?  So why bother, if it is only going to piss everybody off, and accomplish the opposite of what you want to accomplish?

Maybe there should be a forum titled "politiciansihate"

I have gotten so sick of hearing everybody's politics where I work, so I put up a sign at my counter telling people not to discuss politics with me. I was surprised at how many people commented on my sign, telling me how they are also sick of people who discuss politics where they work or live. For some reason people think that since I am a federal employee, that I am into politics.

Maybe it's because some people long for something more interesting than the boring, banal chit chat & prattling on about nothing in particular that tends to dominate a lot of forums.

If you think it's about trying to change somebody else's mind, you've missed the point.

It's about defending your side. It's about the debate. The duel. The contest. Who can prove the other guy's last statement was innaccurate or mislaeading or factually false.

And because you have to do research & look things up, you learn about actual important matters that affect your life & the country.

What could be more important than that?

What could be more patriotic?

As a matter of fact, I think the argument can be convincingly made that those who don't participate aren't living up to their responsibilities as U.S. citizens to keep themselves informed about what's going on in the world & in their government.

At least we keep it in it's own forum so those who don't like it don't have to expose themselves to it.

I too applaud your decision, as I have also mostly done the same thing, at least with regard to this forum. I just prefer not to get into fights with people, so in order to avoid saying things that I know I'll regret later, I just stay out of it.

Some people enjoy different things than others.

Like I said, those who don't are not required to participate.

I love how the people who complain the most about political discussions just can't seem to stay out of them.

It's very simple.

Stay out of the forums where politics are being discussed!!!!!!

I know that. And I actually love reading the political arguments on this board, from both sides. I actually love politics. I just like you all too much to participate in fighting about it because I know that I am not necessarily clear or articulate enough to get my view points across sometimes (especially when I'm angry).

And some people long for something other than the same old garbage that spews out of political discourse which seems to dominate so many forums.

If you think it's about trying to change somebody else's mind, you've missed the point.

It sure doesn't appear that way.

It's about defending your side. It's about the debate. The duel. The contest. Who can prove the other guy's last statement was innaccurate or misleading or factually false.

That tends to be more of a consequence rather than a reason.

And because you have to do research & look things up, you learn about actual important matters that affect your life & the country.

I already do that. I read 7 newspapers almost everyday, yet I don't see the need to push my viewpoints onto others.

What could be more important than that?

Spending quality time with my children, because I know what is really important in life. And it certainly isn't politics.

What could be more patriotic?

Buying American.

You need to debate politics in internet forums to keep abreast of current events? That's news to me. Like I said, reading newspapers seems to get the job done for me.

At least we keep it in it's own forum so those who don't like it don't have to expose themselves to it.

It just happened to come up in order behind yours.

I don't think your post was even on the board when I was typing that.

But anyway, I understand what you're saying. Wink

I just shoot for the truth and urge the other side of the argument to support their claims, so they are a more legitimate opponent. I don't like fighting with an opponent that's weak, that makes it too easy. I want a challenge, it gets me to set a higher bar in how I argue my point.

Sometimes I don't like political discussion, and I either don't participate or have a little fun with the participants.

It's so hard to avoid topics about politics because lots of times politics pops up in threads that have absolutely nothing to do it and then takes it over. I hate when that happens.

I also hate the fights that come with them. There are some here who find them enjoyable but I don't.

Someone said that political arguments don't change anyone's views.  I disagree with that.  While Jimbo and I may not change each other's viewpoints, we're at least both making it clear to others that there are more viewpoints than just the ones they habitually expose themselves to.  If people don't expose themselves to other viewpoints, they end up believing everything their own side tells them to, without seeing any need to verify it.  I'm not saying people can't look into things on their own, but exposing themselves to a decent debate is one way of doing it.
