Congrats, on the move and new career opportunity, ForumAdmin!...so...when should we expect to 'mark our calendars' and 'check our mailboxes' (for sponsor-supplied free airline tickets and hotel reservations, including meals) for the 'First Annual CIH-in-LA' group meeting?

Welcome back to California, ForumAdmin! I'm moving to South Carolina next month (still choking on that). I'll be with my brother and sister-in-law till I find a place of my own, in the Myrtle Beach area. I'm in the middle of sorting through a lifetime's worth of crap, pack rat that I am, and selling off almost everything. I've lived in this apartment for 19 years, and I hate to leave it.But I'll be closer to my family (except for David, who is currently working on Season 3 of RuPaul's Drag Race, as an associate producer (he did the same for Season 2). But he'll be out to visit me. As it is, I barely see him now.Anyway, I'll be back to haunt you guys once I'm settled. Hope everyone is well.Faith

Thanks, Hootie! Oh, you mean that warm, wet washcloth called "air" in the South? Yeah. Lookin' forward to that, alright. On the other hand, it has been so damned cold in San Francisco for the last few weeks. Looks like another July 4th with winter coats, scarves and gloves!

I lived about 20 miles just north of Myrtle Beach(right on the NC./SC line) from 1995-2000. A little town named Calabash. It does get cold down there during the winter so don't discard your winter clothes.
Before you know it, you'll have this southern accent too.

Tiz, I can meet up with you at the Tanger Outlets! ;-)
It's so cold and foggy in San Francisco, I can't wait for the sun. Of course, I'll be bitching about the heat in no time. (You can always add layers when it's cold.) I'm already practicing the accent, along with lines like, "Well, bless your heart!" and "I am so blessed." Anything else I should be brushing up on? |

"Hay-um, pleeese". Unless you're Kosher, in which case you won't have to say it at all.

Yes, ham is pronounced like that. You'll need to know that when asking the deli person at any of the fine
stores there.

I should mention that the farther away from MB itself, the cheaper things will be. They prey on "turrists." It's pronounced that way. The taxes around Calabash/Sunset Beach are super low.
Nice area to live in btw.

I've shopped at The Pig, as my brother calls it. Sunset Beach is beautiful! I'm wondering, though, how the sun sets in the East over there! Here, it sets in the west! ;-) Thor, I'm not kosher, but I'm not a big fan of hay-um. (I do love bacon now and then, however.) My brother is in Murrell's Inlet, so I want to stay somewhere around that area. |

I got here on Tuesday night. I'm still numb from the seven weeks leading up to the move. I got rid of almost everything I owned, which turned out to be a lot more crap than I'd thought.
I don't think I ever told you guys about Baby Girl, the cat I began fostering 11 days after TJ died. She had been in a cage for four months before I got her, and she was understandably skittish and aloof. Long story short, we got really close and grew to love each other. My nephew and his girlfriend adopted her a few days before I left San Francisco, and today my nephew told me that Baby Girl has begun eating again, and is now sleeping with him and his girlfriend, so I'm very relieved.
So when I say I had to let go of everything, I meant it. I basically had an apartment sale for six weeks, but it intensified the last few days I was there. The SF Rescue Mission asked if I would consider donating whatever was left over. I told them that as long as they would take EVERYTHING, they were more than welcome to it. So after we decided we'd sold about everything we were going to (including my car), the Rescue Mission came and picked up the remainder.
It was incredibly hard to leave my home of 19 years. I really thought I would live there until I died. But now I am in South Carolina, and my emotions are starting to thaw out. I have to tell you that my incredible friends, Larry and Darrin, were there every step of the way, guiding me and telling me it wouild all be taken care of. Then my sister and brother came out for the last week, and David and my nephew also came in. Friends came to say goodbye. I kept my emotions as frozen as I could, and I'm waiting for reality to set in.
I just thank God for my friends and family. I know how very lucky I am to have people who love me enough to have sheparded me through all that and stayed by my side while I was a stressed-out zombie.
Now another chapter begins.
Tiz, I thought of you today when I passed a sign for the Calabash restaurants. I am now practicing saying "y'all" and phrases such as, "Well, bless her heart!"

I can't imagine doing what you had to do, Faith. Making such a big move when you're 20-something is one thing. It's much different when we get to---uhhh---our age. When I moved out of SF, I knew I was only two hours away, so it wasn't so bad. But soon enough, I found myself less and less interested in visiting the town. I got into my new life in a new location, and rarely looked back with any longing. Besides, my best years in SF were long behind me at that point, and I realized that whenever I missed SF at all, it was the SF I experienced from about 1980 to 1997. Those years are where my best memories of SF are.
I haven't been to SF in a long time. But the Other Cafe "reunion" at the Palace of Fine Arts is coming up in September, and I'll be heading down there to see many of the people I knew 25 years ago. The fact that the reunion is not going to be in a space at the corner of Carl and Cole is unimportant. It's not about location.
Anyway, my point is that many of the things you loved in SF are still accessible---by phone, by email, by photograph, and in memory (and if you have to actually be there, there're always planes). The important things have little to do with the physical location of the city or its geography. Now, the hassle's behind you and you'll find that you have the opportunity to create a whole new set of friends and memories. And believe me, the old ones don't go away. As I said, you have planes and photos and a phone and email, etc. Even your cat is still accessible!
Really, Faith, now that the hell of moving is over, you're gonna love your new life.

Cool beans. Moving from one side of the country to the other must of been hard...... even though this is the better side.
If you saw a Calabash sign, you must be fairly close to the coast. Where abouts are you?

Thor:
Thank you for your post. You're right, of course, in everything you said. I am still connected to my friends and family on the other coast. I wish I were able to be at The Other reunion; I was looking forward to it. You'll have a great time!
Tiz, I'm currently in Murrells Inlet, just a bit south of Myrtle Beach. My brother took me up into North Myrtle and saw signs for Wilmington, but I can't remember exactly how far away I was. The Calabash signs were for a restaurant (maybe a chain). I actually drove my sister-in-law's car to CVS today. It's going to take some time to get my bearings.
Actually, this is the fourth cross-country move: First in 1979, from Jersey to SF; 1987 back to Jersey; 1990 back to SF, and now to SC. I'm hoping that's the last one; as Thor said, at our age, it's much different from being in our 20s!
I left SF in its typical July gloom: cold, foggy and windy, and have landed in 90+-degree heat. It is beautiful here, though. I'll be happy when it cools off just a little bit.
I'll catch up with you all soon. As always, thanks for the support!

Do you plan on getting your own pad, Faith? If so, I'd suggest you find an area where families don't rule---someplace where there's lotsa stuff for adults to do. In other words, don't plant yourself near any Olympic Park, Irvington, NJ sorts of places.
Oh, and of course, you probably want a place that allows cats. I was glad to hear that yours has a good home now.
The Other reunion is already turning into a political battle---the former employees versus management. Some want to hold an alternative reunion that night, based on bad quarter-century-old blood. Sigh. I realize it's the Haight, but it's time for the aging rebels to get over their bad revolutionary selves and just go to the damned show. I want to see them all, dammit, but I don't want to spend the time griping about the boss. I swear---some people want to automatically regress to the way things were 25 years ago.

Hey, Thor. Yes, I'll be getting my own place eventually. This is a family-friendly area. Lots of religion, though of course most of it isn't my own. It will take some getting used to, but as long as people don't try to shove their religion down my throat, we'll be okay.
As for the Other, it doesn't surprise me, although it does disappoint. It's one of the things I won't miss about San Francisco. When I put my apartment sale on Craigslist, I got a reply that began, "Thank you for posting your sale on Craigslist." As though this was from Craig himself. The message was actually quite heavy-handed about not putting up signs for the sale, and how that leads to urban blight and the decline of civilization. I replied that had he asked nicely, I might have been willing to comply, but who made him God? I got replies from one of his minions, including the ordinance that says you're not supposed to put up signs.
When I Googled this jerk (Rick Thurber), I found out that he routinely follows people, ripping down their signs as soon as they put them up--and it doesn't matter what the sign is for. A lost kitten or puppy? He'll rip them down.
So the night before the last weekend, we put up some 8-1/2 x 11 inch signs, including one in the lobby of my building. The next day, the signs were gone, and behind the one in the lobby, they had stuck a three-page screed about my "mini-billboards," including the ordinance (again). Even better, there was a notice at the bottom of this semi-official-looking thing, offering $1,500 to the person who could identify the scofflaw who put up these mini-billboards (which would be me). They used the address of City Hall, along with "not an official agency." It called itself an official notice, and was "served" by someone with another name (Bob Williams).
This was so typical of the kind of political bullsh*t in San Francisco that it was actually an appropriate send-off. That and the $88 parking ticket my sister and brother got for parking at night by a red curb which had no sign, no driveway cut-out, and no way to tell that it was illegal to park there.
I sang karaoke on Thursday night, and that was fun. Of course, the alcohol helped a LOT! Sunday we're having a birthday brunch for my sister-in-law, and that will be fun, too. I'm going to be doing some part-time work for my brother, which I'll tell you about later.
I really do hope the show goes well, Thor. I just wish those babies would grow the hell up.
