I can't watch television anymore! Why? Well there are a lot of reasons. First of all, IT'S ALL COMMERCIAL GARBAGE!!!" There are no shows anymore...just hours upon hours of commercials! I mean it's bad enough that the so-called "TV shows"alone have no creative focus. Now we have these new breed of ads that are even worse. They would scream: there are thieves, criminals, and killers everywhere (example LifeLock and ADT) You have those ProActiv commercials that literally say "Use our product or you'll be alone for the rest your days!"  I'm just sick of the nauseating amount of commercials we have suffer through. Yeah just what we want to see 4 minutes of exaggerations, absurdity, fearmongering, and bullsh*t! We didn't subscribe to our cable companies to watch stupid company mascots, yuppie snobs nasilly boasting about how we're all disgusting pigs and losers, restaurants that use mean-spirited hypocrisy(i.e Subway), and Ashton Kutcher acting a jackass more than usual this time with a Nikon camera. Ads should not be more than 45 seconds, and four per break...THAT'S HOW IT SHOULD BE DONE! However, I can't watch TV with comfort until there's reform. If I feel the need to be angry or frightened...I'll watch the goddamned cable news!

That's a darn good vent that speaks for us all.  Well done! Thumbs Up

I hate it when people say, "Ads pay bills to bring you programming."  I ask myself, are the programs really worth it--especially when vintage programming is butchered, sped-up, and/or credit-crunched to bring in MORE ads?!  Unhappy

I don't think you'll find one person around here who disagrees with you, PitLoad.

Even worse than the commercials, as you mentioned, is the lack of creative focus in the shows themselves. The shows are all clones of one another & so are the so-called "actors & actresses" if you want to call them that.

The problem as I see it, is that everything on TV is geared towards young people & the current youth culture.

And because the current youth culture is so crass & generally sucks so badly, TV sucks to the same degree.

And here's the cruel irony..... as the quality of TV sets themselves has improved so astronomically, with picture size & quality better than anyone could've imagined twenty years ago, the quality of the viewing content available for us to watch on them, has gone down the sewer.

Go figure. Confused

I believe in keeping my crap time on shedule.  It must happen in the morning, and must be followed by my morning shower.  None of this hippie "when the spirit moves me" sorta nonsense.  If I find the need to go later on in the day---sorry!  Not gonna happen.  It'll just have to wait until the next morning.  My bowels and I believe in maintaining structure and discipline!!

But there's also the other extreme - people carrying on and on and on about how old everyone's getting, with "ageing baby boomer" this and "ageing baby boomer" that. Am I the only one who usually doesn't care how old everyone is?

Most ads I see on the "classic" TV networks are geared toward older folks: Scooters, adult diapers, LifeAlert, etc.  Are they assuming old folks are the only ones who watch old TV??

Yes, I think they do assume that. Which is funny, because I almost never hear people under a certain age making fun of ALL of "that old black and white stuff." Instead, I hear older people ASSUMING that they're going to. If everyone under such and such age hates everything that's older, how is it that this country is still obsessed with Elvis Presley and Marilyn Monroe? So it doesn't make much sense to assume.

Well, my 13 y/o neighbor says that Beatles music is "gay".  Said the same thing about Iggy Pop's performance on a recent American Idol episode.  LOL

Yeah, but that's what I mean in a way. Those are the 13 year-olds who get most of the attention, the ones who DON'T like any earlier entertainment. It's like knowing geography - there are American kids who know geography, but can you imagine THEM getting any attention?

I think he meant "gay" as in weak or lame.  When I do the math, I realize that the music of 45 years ago to him, would have been for me, whatever came 45 years before I was 13 in 1969.  That would mean the music of 1924.  When I was 13, I didn't pay much mind to ragtime or Rudy Vallee or Al Jolson or whoever was big in 1924.  I probably thought that stuff was stupid, too.

Plus, 13 year-olds nowadays are used to a lot of sex and foul language in music.  That sort of music has been around their entire lives.  To them it's kinda the standard.  By comparison, the Beatles stuff is really tame.

All I know is, the second meaning of "gay" has been run into the ground, and now there's a third one. And I'm kind of glad there's a third one, because it shakes things up.
Of course, I'm tired of people telling me what entertainment is "weak or lame" and what entertainment isn't, no matter what word they use. But people of ALL AGES do that.

As for Rudy Vallee, he was not only about the first teen idol musician, but about the first one with a wild personal life thanks to all those female fans. I'm not saying that's a good thing or a bad thing, but that's enough of a reason he should be better-known even now.

Also, Hollywood execs prefers to play it safe rather than take A chance on something new, and exciting because of A new, and exciting idea fails miserably, and lose all the money they poured into it, they panic because they know full well that if the studio doesn't get a return on their investment, they'll get fired. Then, it's back to more tired old reality shows, sitcoms, and such.

Welcome to 2011, where an overblown karaoke contest can hijack A broadcast network, and become the highest rated TV show in the country. Where An entertainment empire that once prided itself on animation, and innovation now caters to screaming idiot girls with horrible movies, and shallow sitcoms manufacturing pop idols who will eventually end up in ruin before they hit 25. Where an idiot slut can achieve fame, and fortune by creating A sex video, and nothing more. Where A Madonna wannabe freak of nature can bend our perceptions of reality to whatever she wants to achieve success. Where A badly written 'love story' for young girls that makes A mockery of vampire, and warewolf mythology can be made into highly profitable crap movies that win awards from A cable channel that use to pride itself on airing music videos 24/7.
