I think that's what it boils down to.  A lot of people think they're entitled to the spot in line they just left---without any explanation or apology.  All they have to do is be polite about things, and ask your permission to leave and come back!!  "I forgot donuts.  Would you mind if..."

But I think a lotta people see being polite as being weak.  And, for that reason, they also see your politeness as being weak.

I've actually witnessed a great deal of rudeness because of this simple reason. I will never understand the mindset in how one takes kindness for weakness. That's just backwards, and yes entitlement does have a lot to do with. You can not even pay someone a compliment these days because of this. I remember seeing a lady on the bus saying "cute shoes" and then the cute-shoes lady (about my age) responded back in some foul attitude looking the lady up and down "They're [some fancy brand] that I bought from [some fancy store]". Not a thank you or anything. Now does it take all of that? (pardon me for nosying in, but they were some cute shoes)

I had a bad/good experience at a McDonalds in San Antonio, TX around 1985. It was 110 degrees outside and I was getting drinks for my family. There were 5 or 6 registers open with at least 20 customers in line at each one. After about a 15 to 20 minute wait I finally stepped up to the counter. The cashier said: "I'm sorry, this register is closed"!!! I responded "WHAT"!!! They said "it's time for my break". I said that's fine but can you ask your manager to come out here. I was shocked when the manager appeared in less than a minute. He opened the register and served customers until the cashier returned from her break. He also gave me $10 worth of McDonalds coupons.
