She looks so butch. Is it to lure in the lesbians, or that they chose a below-average looking person so as not to appear biased?

She doesn't appear to be 'butch' or below average looking, in my opinion.

If you see regular shots of her, she looks her age.  But the magic of makeup and TV  makes her look much younger.

Note that whenever you see an older celeb touting her looks, or even the women in those "Lifestyle Lift" commercials, their faces all seem to glow.  My guess is that they use very bright lights to create a sort of blinding reflection that obscures wrinkles and sags, or they accomplish the same in the editing room.

Another old trick is to use vaseline on the camera lens to soften everything.

In the early 80s, she was quite pretty.  I wouldn't say she was butch, but she did have the lesbian mullet.  She also used to wear a lotta skintight white jeans.

I'm not a lesbian, but I do think she's a pretty lady and also a genuinely nice person.  I don't ever think badly of her.  I think her Cover Girl ads are funny.  She pokes fun at her own self.  Gosh leave her alone.

She does seem like a nice person, but she's also a product hawking celebrity whose face is almost everywhere nowadays, so that makes her fair game.

I used to really like her a lot as a comedienne, but once she entered the world of yammering nitwit bored housewife daytime TV, she became annoying.

Especially that fake gimmicky dancing thing she does.

"Oh look everybody.... Ellen is doing that dancing thing.

Again.

Let's all laugh now.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA"

I like her and her show but like any overexposed celebrity, I'm tired of seeing her in commercials now. I think she's a Covergirl because(even if it's just the lighting) she looks very young for her age so people think "I can look just like that! She has no wrinkles." Yadda yadda. I've always thought she was kind of pretty, though. I like her cheekbones. Smile
Please, stop saying "Awesome" in commercials! Your actors are not awe-inspiring and neither is your product.

Her wrinkles have been professionally smoothed out by highly paid specialists &/or cosmetic surgeons whose services cost about as much per year as a warehouse full of whatever overpriced goop she's shilling for.

The ones that even they couldn't get rid of are covered up & hidden by the best makeup artists & lighting secialists in the business.

It's a shame to think it, but as "nice" as Ellen comes across as, she's still enriching herself by selling false hope to millions of women & helping some shyster cosmetic company take their money.

And that is not "nice".

Look at her picture in Wikipedia.  She looks like a woman in her mid-50s (which she is).  Then look at her commercial.  She looks 15 years younger.  It's all smoke and mirrors.

I think a lot of people really think that somehow, celebrities have special "age-defying" genetics.  They don't.  They age like everyone else.

I think what people really think, is that celebrities have access to state-of-the-art, "miracle" anti-aging methods, compounds, creams, goops & high-tech laser gizmos that have previously only been available in Europe, but they are now willing to share these secrets with the public, so YOU can enjoy an eternally youthful appearance just like Ellen, Valerie Bertinelli & Cindy Crawford.

Even with the work she might have had done on her face she still terrible frown lines.  On a HD TV you can really see them, even in the Covergirl ads.

Another reason I prefer Britain's elder entertainers. I've seen them do ads, and they don't have the miracle glowing.

Everyone from the wonderful Julie Walters

to Joanna Lumley (She looks a little glowy, but she still doesn't look as plastic faced as Ellen.)

Even the fatties don't need trick clothing to look skinny, or to ONLY advertise weightloss programmes.

Let's be honest, they've got us beaten in raw confidence.

The same as every other celebrity, including the other Covergirl spokeswomen. Confused I'm not some big fan defending her or anything, but if the others can make money off stupid women and their vanity/insecurity than why not her too? She never said she was Jesus, y'know?

I mean really, does anyone believe crappy drugstore foundation will take 20 years off your appearance? I can't fault Covergirl for their ads if women are that gullible. You myswell sell glue to them and advertise it as a "miracle face cream" and rake in the cash. Oh wait, that's basically what Covergirl does.
No sympathy here for anyone involved.

For the record, I really like Ellen.

I believe the company is using her because she is well preserved for her age but her biggest draw is because she hates using a lot of makeup and spending massive amount of time doing it--that appeals to a lot of women who don't like wearing lots of makeup and most other companies make you feel that if you don't look like a model there's something wrong with you. This also makes her less threatening than usual "cover girls."
A new study finds that people who are chipper & happy live longer. Which is surprising because people who aren't chipper & happy want to kill people who are always chipper & happy. David Letterman

WinkAgreed. I do not find her offensive at all...and, in her own way, attractive - and that thought comes from the way she presents herself or the product - just 'straight-laced'. Pointed.
Her new JCP commercial about "14.99" (I can't say dollars, because she uses pounds and pence) actually reminds me a ton of the classic British television show,  "Are You Being Served?". I get a kick out of that one.

I too like Ellen.  Jennifer isn't exactly a dream queen without the makeup.

Neither is talentless, 88 pound waif Kelly Ripa.

^Even though I'm a wee bit sick of Jennifer, I do have to come to her defense and say those two pictures are horrendous for comparison. She's sun-burned, squinting, and wet, in the first picture. I dare you to show me anyone who looks good in those conditions.

It's kind of like these people who were insisting this one Japanese celebrity had eye surgury, when the only picture they had of him younger was outdoors in bright sunlight.

Yeah, but the difference here, Dear, is that Ellen's whole shtick is about being so nice & honest & warm & fuzzy & squeaky clean, etc. etc.

And honestly, just because "other celebrities do it" is no excuse.

And as your mother would've said.... "If all the other celebrities jumped off a cliff, would Ellen do it too????" Wink

I guess my point was that it's kinda hypocritical for Ellen to promote the public image of herself as having all those great human qualities, then turn around & convince people who look up to & trust her, to waste their hard earned money on crap she probably doesn't use herself, all for the sake of making a ton of money for herself.

Thassall I'uz sayin, yo.
