Ok I think I'm starting to see the latest trend in TV commercials. Move over stupid dad, we now have Greedy B*&^$ (probably as a result of going to Jared's).

I first saw evidence in an American Express commercial that's been airing on and off for the past few months. I wish I could find the video but basically it shows this guy talking to his wife (she's in another room) about how they have all these reward points and all the things he wants to do with them. He's talking excitedly about them going on vacation, going out to dinner, doing all this nice extravagant stuff together and at every suggestion the wife calls out "no we can't". Finally, he says something like "but honey with Amex reward points we can do whatever we want." And the wife finally walks into the room wearing a new dress and says "I know" while taking a tada pose. So while hubby has all these big plans to enjoy a substantial number of points (because his suggestions were NOT cheap) this greedy takes it upon herself to spend it all on a dress! I can't figure out the look on the guy's face when she makes this revelation. He's smiling but it's like he's either on the verge of homicidal rage or he just died a little inside.

Then there's the commercial I JUST saw this morning and I have to say I don't understand the angle Target is trying to take. It shows a family unwrapping gifts under the tree and mom unwraps a fairly large plasma tv and goes "oh, thanks santa!" The room goes quiet and dad and small children look puzzled. Dad says (obviously annoyed) "wow, I thought we were in a recession."

Mom says "well maybe santa didn't spend as much as you think" and hugs the tv saying again "thank you"

Dad starts to say something and mom cuts him off with "maybe Santa doesn't need you telling him how to do his job!" and smiles at him...

and THAT'S how the commercial ENDS! WTF was that?! I guess nothing says Christmas like marital strife and divorce! I have a fairly dark and twisted sense of humor but I honestly can't find anything remotely cute or funny about this commercial and again would REALLY like to know where Target is coming from with this. Surely there's a happier, more clever or actually funny way of conveying that "electronics cost less in Target" than this!

Ok end rant:)

Wow. I agree. I personally think they should both spend the money on what they really want, not spend it all on something that they can't both use. Like a dress.

My mistake, I just saw the commercial again and it's a Chase card commercial not Amex. I also noticed that the Target commercial I ranted about earlier hasn't aired since so maybe they got complaints or tested it after they broadcast it and it didn't do as well. I've seen three other commercials conveying the same message and they're a bit better.

Craftychiq, I HATE that Chase commercial, and I agree with you totally.  That was my first reaction, too:  WTF?  She decided on her own to buy a dress for herself instead of making a joint decision (most likely on something they can both enjoy), and he seems perfectly fine with that.  She's a greedy witch, and he's an idiot.  I mean, I'm sure there are lots of couples like that, but the characters are hardly sympathetic.  And isn't that the point of a commercial, to make you feel like you can relate to the characters?

The thing is this commercial is even worst than I thought because it starts out with her coming to him in the dress and saying "what do you think?" and THEN he launches into his excitement about the extra points and all the great stuff they can do together before she drops the bombshell that ha ha too late you married a selfish cow who used up all the points all ready I expected the next scene to be from street level pointing up at the apartment in the fancy glass high rise above and a figure suddenly crashing through the window and falling on to the street!:-P

I hate both of them but especially The Chase ad, that greedy bitch spent all the points on a lousy dress instead of saving them for something special! f**k her and her greedy little smile.
One good thing about TV-you could always turn it off

Notice the gold digger in this Jared ad. She is more excited about where the ring came from than the actual marriage proposal....... then the poor schmugg comes in. "I guess you told her."

I don't hate that Jared ad for one particular reason. It has what a lot of people would consider a "throwback" look to it (either in a good or a bad way, depending on who you are). One woman shows another her engagement ring, and they both dance around in a frenzy? Where do you see that anymore, except in some comedy about "outdated" stuff? And yet this commercial shows it without any (overdone) irony. So it's kind of original just for doing that.
