Comcast/Xfinity (make up your minds!) has occupied a special place in my heart ever since their technicians needed to access the power pole in my back yard and left my gate open when they were done. This allowed my dogs access to the entire neighborhood when I let them out later, and when I called to complain I got a guy in India who's best solution was a month of free premiums that I declined.
Anyway, this ad plays 12,000 times a day where I live and there is a line in the copy that drives me insane - "It means a dispatch unit acting more like ground traffic control." *deep breath* Okay, look, I get it. The copy writer was going for a really good simile about 'dispatch units', so what's a really good example of a dispatch unit? Air Traffic Control, right? Those people at the airport who keep all the planes coming and going? That's like super dispatch! "It means a dispatch unit acting more like air traffic control." Fantastic - except this is where it leaves the rails. They bumped the word 'air' for 'ground', I think, because the ad shows not a single airplane, and the Final Say people decided that the word 'air' would therefore be confusing to the general population - cuz we're stupid. So let's interpret the line literally just to be jerks: Ground traffic control? Isn't that just a rough definition of 'dispatch unit'? It's like saying "I have a car that acts more like a motor vehicle". That's pretty dumb, but the fact is that airports have Ground Traffic Control. It's a real thing. What they do is deal with all the parking lots, taxicabs, limos, towncars, and all the civilian traffic in and out of departures and arrivals. They control ground traffic (duh). They don't actually 'dispatch' anything since they really only deal with the traffic on airport property, and they don't control a fleet, so when the copy writers dropped 'air' for 'ground' they actually reworked the copy to mean that their dispatch unit acts more like an overblown valet service. Clearly not the intended meaning. |
