I may be in the minority here but I don't give a damn about Oscar Pistorius! His case has been featured on the nightly news for the past two years and I just don't know why it matters to people here in the USA.
I'm glad he was found guilty, and I'm equally glad that he'll be doing time in jail. I think all criminals should be held in jail for their complete sentence, but I doubt he will be in there for the full five years.
Why was this trail so important that it had to be featured on the nightly news for the past two years?
Does anyone really care about this abusive creep? He's a murderer, so he should be seen as only that, not the handicapped Olympian, or whatever else people find so fascinating about this creep. He had an abusive relationship with his murdered girlfriend before he killed her. I hope his stay in jail is horrible....he deserves it!

I didn't really understand all the hoopla in the US around this story.  I've always switched channels whenever the story came on the news.  Among the South Africans, I could understand it, but I doubt too many in the US had ever even heard of him and his babe before this.

Just another "celebrity tragedy".

For some reason, Americans eat that sh*t up. But it's probably not just us. It's the same the world over. People love to see the high & mighty take a tumble. And of course, the media keeps it whipped into a frenzy too.

Anything to increase the ratings.

Personally I find it both boring & sickening.

All I can figure is that some people see him as the Lance Armstrong of running....

I've paid no attention to this. Simply more sensational b.s.

OK, I'm going to play theorist here...

I always had a gut feeling that this guy was on steroids or something and couldn't perform that night and the girlfriend either made fun of him or an argument started and he lost it.

Just sayin'.

But yeah, they went overboard (as usual) with this BS. He should be doing 15.

I am not familiar with South African law because I have no reason to be. Oscar's defense was so far fetched it did not deserve consideration. He violated common sense rules of self defense.

1. A suspected intruder may have been in the bathroom behind a closed door and Oscar had a gun. What was the threat? Call the police and wait.

2. The "target" was not identified.

3. A co-inhabitant of the dwelling was unaccounted for.

It should have involved a one day trial to convict him for what we call manslaughter. He should have been convicted of 1st degree murder. I understand he is eligible for parole in 10 months.

If it was any of us "normal" people, it would be 25 to life.

I'm sick and tired of the phrase "blade runner" for the new this guy. It makes me think I'm gonna see something cool from this futuristic movie. Only to be disappointed by a guy running on blades.

South Africa is one of the most violent countries in the world.  It has more than 6x the murder rate of the US.  Maybe they just don't have any more room in their prisons (though, granted, Pistorius doesn't require as much room as most).

I wonder how much money was deposited in some secret foreign bank account of the judge who sentenced him to only five years, with only a ten month minimum.

I also wonder how much money will be deposited in the secret foreign bank accounts of the parole officials in charge of granting Pistorius home confinement in his father's mansion for the remainder of his sentence after the ten month minimum is up.

I don't think that's the way things happen in South Africa (except for the "wait" part).  I just read that there's so much corruption and violence in the country that even the lead investigator in the Pistorius case is awaiting trial on 7 counts of attempted murder.

The dissolution is everywhere. Rival ANC leaders tear their party apart. Local politicians shoot each other in the street--40 assassinations in the past two years in President Jacob Zuma's home state of KwaZulu-Natal alone. The wave of labor unrest that saw police shoot dead 34 miners at a Marikana platinum mine last August--and has held South Africa's economy hostage ever since--has its origins in a power struggle between two unions. In the townships, South African blacks beat and kill Zimbabweans, Somalis and Congolese. In white areas, Afrikaner whites separate themselves from English whites, nursing a distrust that dates from the 1899--1902 Boer War.

If you're of any means in South Africa, you live in gated communities surrounded by electrified razor wire and a batallion of security guards.  If anyone's familiar with The Walking Dead, think Woodbury.

South Africa is a very violent society. Although Sacramento is not crime free it is relatively safe. I remember a few years ago when vehicles in SA were equipped with shotguns and flame throwers mounted in drivers side doors. Their carjackers tended to shoot and kill the driver, dump them on the street, and drive away. If there were kids in the back they would kill them and dump them on the street. I can understand someone experiencing a home invasion shooting first. I think the "blade runner" for some reason felt he had to kill his girlfriend and planned to not be convicted.
