I was scanning through the TV channels last night and noticed that the Country Music Awards was on ABC. Didn't they just have an awards show a few months back?
Every 6 weeks it seems that the country music folks decide to have some big ass celebration on TV with headlines like "Nashville's Biggest Night" or "What Country is all about!" I'm not really ranting about it but sheesh - enough with the award shows every season. How many statuettes do these people need? |

Don't even get me started on country music! The state of "country" music is abysmal. It has been completely commercialized and dumbed-down so that it doesn't even resemble country music at all.
I have never been a fan of country, but there have been some decent artists over the years. George Strait, Randy Travis, Alabama, Steve Wariner, Merle Haggard, Glen Campbell, Ronnie Milsap and the like. The current crop of "country" artists are not really artists at all. They don't even write most of their songs. And the songs are so formula driven they all tend to sound the same. They call it bro-country. To listen to this new country you really need a low IQ. Completely ridiculous idiotic lyrics and recycled simple chord patterns and a bunch of posing is what new country is all about. Every once in a while I tune to the country station, and am utterly shocked at how utterly horrible the songs really are. What is even more shocking is how popular these "artists" are. Apparently there are a ton of fans out there who say they love this new country, and support them with cd sales, and concert tickets, and that's why these "artists" are still around. What is scary is that these fans are presumably members of the voting public. If you can get someone to like this horrible new country music, you can get them to like or support just about anything. S C A R Y!!!!!!!!!! As far as the awards shows, country has really "gone hollywood". It's really just bread and circuses for the dumb masses. This country is going to hell, and new country music (at least the mainstream stuff played on radio and CMT) is simply a reflection of that. |

Since becoming a judge on The Voice, Blake Shelton is all over tv. Every time I see him, I just want to punch him. He is such an f***ing moron!!! I mean, really, from his exaggerated country accent to basically everything that comes out of his mouth, he just annoys the piss out of me! How in the hell can anyone like this guy?!?!? |

Oh, and Taylor Swift can go jump off a bridge. Like you, I am SOOO sick of her. She is not even pretty. Just a stupid, vapid girl wrapped up in a narcissistic little world of her own.

I can't stand Taylor Swift or Blake Shelton. At the end of the day, they're just another couple of window lickers if you ask me. Country "music" has gone way downhill since the "popificition" of everything. I remember growing up with my dad listening to Alabama, Willie Nelson, and a few others. I didn't mind it. Actually kind of liked it. That is until I found 50's to early 60's music. But that's another story. I was an odd child. But I will say this, if there's another CMA crap fest going on, then I'm buying stock in red SOLO cups. Rednecks love them.

Give it 6 weeks and another award show will be airing. Right before the grammys. Or after. Or during. Who the hell can remember there are so many of these goddamn predictable award ceremonies. |

Agreed. Today's "country" songs sound like today's "rock" songs sung with a twang. Pretty mediocre. There's some good stuff out there, but you'd never hear it on the radio. For instance, this, which reminds me a bit of Johnny Cash (maybe more rockabilly than country?): As I went to Youtube to get this song, the featured video was of Justin Timberlake at the awards show. What business does Timberlake have performing country music? Apparently, they just want his star power. |

I was at my mom's house Wednesday night.
Not surprisingly, my sister was in her room watching the CMA's. Her tastes have always been questionable at best. |

No George Strait, Garth Brooks or Alan Jackson on the CMAs Wednesday night. And you know why I don't listen to today's country anymore? It's frickin garbage. It's top 40 music with a southern accent. Back in the good ole days, 1980s and 1990s, country music did not have urbanized rapping, or heavy metal. They were songs about love and about things to do in the country.
I wouldn't go to any of these awards even if I was given $10,000 to do it.

Well, you all should just love this...
Actually, to be honest, I like it more than most mainstream "country" music that's out there now. |

You're right, modern country is just twangy modern pop. And indeed there IS still good country out there, guys like Slaid Cleaves, Brian Burns, Mark David Manders, Chris Knight, Charlie Robison, various others, but you won't hear them on the radio or CMT cause they're "too country". |

Oh yeah, Waylon and Willie are classic. If you don't like ANY country it's one thing, but if you do like real country, those guys are kinda mandatory.

Some of my boss's back in the dark ages made me listen to country music.
I tried to find the bright side.
I don't watch much PBS anymore but I remember an episode of Austin City Limits.
I was introduced to this woman.

My dad grew up in the South during the 20's and 30's. A few years after WWII, he got stationed near home during the 50's which was pretty much the heyday of Nashville country music. "Real country" to his generation was Johnny Cash, June Carter, the Hanks (Snow, Williams and Thompson), Buck Owens, Ferlin Husky, George Jones, Grandpa Jones, etc, etc, etc. Basically the Grand Ol' Opry crowd. To my dad, guys like Waylon and Willie were just "hippies", not "real" country. |

I didn't even watch the CMA's this year. I figured it was going to be mainly a pop-music fest.
I grew up on country stars (some of whom still perform today) such as George Strait, Reba McEntire, Johnny Cash, Ronnie Milsap, Dolly Parton, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, Loretta Lynn, Oak Ridge Boys, Alabama, Statler Brothers, Barbara Mandrell, Kenny Rogers and Hank Williams Jr., to name several. Country music ain't what it used to be.

My Papaw grew up in the 20's and 30's too, born in West Virginia, moved to Texas after WW2. He considered Johnny Cash, the Hanks, Buck Owens, George Jones, etc etc etc real country. He also considered guys like Waylon and Willie real country. |

I would not know Taylor Swift or Blake Shelton if they knocked on my front door. Talent? I doubt it. Class? None.
They could not even carry Loretta Lynn's shoes! |
