That's terrible
I watched their show religiously when I was a kid (as reruns since they were filmed a few years before I was born). RIP Davy. |

I just hope when Davy got to the Pearly Gates and caught his first glimpe of Jesus, he thought "Then I saw His face! Now I'm a believer!"

Whoa. This one's a surprise.
RIP, Davy.
A bit o' trivia---He was the reason another 60s singer named Davy Jones changed his name to David Bowie.

Davey was always considered "the cute one".
The one all the little girls (my sister included) went gaga over. Sort of the Paul McCartney of the Monkees, but without the musical chops. Anyway, RIP Daydream Believer. |

A lot of their songs were Carol King songs. I don't think they wrote any of their own, other than one Mike Nesmith wrote. |

I'm a Believer was a Neil Diamond song. So was A Little Bit of Me, a Little Bit of You. It's always been really easy to imagine those songs being sung by Diamond. Totally his style.

Sorry, guys...weak attempt at religious humor. Reg said:
"Let us hope he bacame a believer BEFORE he arrived at the Pearly Gates, because if you see him there and you havn't believed in him, it's too late!!! ".. My comment was regarding, "It's too late"... Ms. King wrote that one. |

Yep. Sold the patent for 40 million bucks then left it all to Mikey. Hence the reason why he never took part in the Monkees reunion tours. |

Technically David Jones changed his name to David Bowie, then wrote the song Cha Cha Cha Changes.

Except that The Monkees never did that song. Carol King did write some of their songs, though. I think she wrote "Another Pleasant Valley Sunday". |

Pleasant Valley Sunday was written by King about a town near where I grew up in Jersey---West Orange.
Apparently, she lived there and didn't like it too much.

I kinda always preferred the closing song of the Monkees' TV show, more than the opening theme.

I think the song was more about middle class materialism than it was about the town itself.
I think she just used the town metaphorically.

Yeah, on a broader scale. But it was "inspired" by the street she lived on---Pleasant Valley Way, West Orange, NJ. I didn't know this until now.
Thematically, it reminds me of this song, which was a pretty big hit, but is never heard anymore. I always liked it. Kinda pop protest music lite:
