Somehow the adholes at DirecTV thought it was a good idea to bring back those old "cable company boardroom" ads from several years ago, and continue to make them as snooty as the original campaign.

I do give this one points for being honest. Everyone always says there won't be firings after a merger, but there always are.

Wait a minute isn't that what AT&T and Direct TV are doing? Merging?
One good thing about TV-you could always turn it off

Actually, AT&T is out in front of this.

For quite some time now, AT&T has:

1) Agressively cut spending (including network upgrades)
2) "Surplused" thousands of its employees (the # I heard was 22,500, and that's just the first round of layoff in 2015 - more are coming!)
3) Got rid of a whole bunch of contractors (exactly how this helps, I'm not sure?)
4) Leveraging financial instruments and "funny money" (something they do anyway)
5) And, procrastinate on virtually everything. (i.e., Kick the can..)

Just do a Google search on any of the (hundreds?) of CWA Union locals who have to explain the AT&T "surplus" to its members.

"Surplus" - what a hoot!

o_O are they trying to save money by hurting themselves rather than spending it on improvements that would benefit them more in the long run? i think i suddenly understand a piece of how dumbass companies/corporations work if that's the case.

shame the opposite (aka something good) can't happen with ISP's, huh? internet on average is crappy everywhere unless you live in a big city or something. we're on wifi here and it's "high speed" yet...high speed translates to 180kb/s max download speed, average loading speed when browsing, and generally just a relatively moderate step up from dial-up or the bandwidth capping and throttling satellite ISP's.

but of course, no one ever wants to spend money on good things like improving quality when they can pull scumbag tactics to leech money from customers instead. right?

thankfully this wifi is only limited by speed usually (barring adverse weather conditions of course) and they neither cap nor throttle us so it's not too bad despite being slow.

^Same thing. Tried to see if I could get an upgrade on internet speed, but apparently the most we can get out here is 3Mbps.

I did kit out my modem with a hi-speed phone cable (The cable that goes from the phoneline to the modem) and have nothing by cat 6 or cat7 cables connected to devices, and on average I'm pulling in just over the 3Mbps. My main computer has cat7 Ethernet, and if I'm not downloading sh*tloads of stuff, I'm getting 5-6 Mbps through it.

I imagine the limits they mention are sort of "guaranteed" limits rather than hard...at least in areas like this where an upgrade is seemingly impossible. In a city, I imagine it'd be very easy to strangle your connection down to 3Mbps no exceptions, so you have to shill out for 7Mbps or higher.

from speedtest.net: current connection speed is... ping 126ms, download speed 0.89Mbps, upload speed 0.75Mbps

and the router we use uses a dynamic IP which changes every so often so the connection fluctuates now and then. i saw our upload speed go higher than the download speed once which was quite the strange sight. note: a dynamic IP can sometimes set off the security confirmation process in online games. (it happens when i try playing path of exile or if i ever bother with RIFT. maybe others)

and yet, if i right click and check the status on my laptops connection icon it says Speed: 54 Mbps. -_- yeah, well everyone knows that that is always a bs number in the status window.

More likely, the laptop connection to your modem is 54 Mbps.
But the connection from your modem to the network is much slower.

Laptop <--> Modem <-(x)-> Internet

The bottleneck is at (x).

That's what I thought. AT&T hasn't owned DirecTV for more than three months yet, so they haven't gotten around to make cuts at DirecTV. And, as we know, all pay TV providers (including DirecTV) have been struggling with subscriber growth (DirecTV seems to be losing more subscribers than adding them, except for the beginning of NFL season, when they bundle Sunday Ticket with the service).

A local station in Green Bay and my hometown of Indy are off the air because of a dispute with Dish Network.

I hate AT&T.

When we moved in here in 2006, AT&T had a deal with Dish Network and they provided the service billed through AT&T.

I would never go back to their services.
