Kellogg's Frosted Flakes were originally advertised as "Sugar Frosted Flakes"
and Corn Pops were called "Sugar Corn Pops" !

Nope, they were "Sugar Pops!" Corn wasn't even mentioned. There were also Sugar Smacks and Sugar Crisp. There was an animated Sugar Bear spokesperbear, and he crooned, "Can't get enough of my Sugar Crisp to keep me goin' strong."

I don't remember "Sugar" in the Frosted Flakes name, but they were damned proud of their sugar cereals. I grew up eating these cereals (which 'splains a WHOLE lot!).

Edit: I just looked at the picture again. That looks like it was before or after my time, but I never noticed the "corn" in the name.

I see to remember the Sugar Pops box with a locomotive on the box with the pops coming from the engine.

Maybe it wasn't here in the "States", but I remember it when I was a youngster.

They were always a big favourite of mine.

I also remember Rice Krinkles, does anyone else?

...Wait... I always thought that those cereals took "sugar" out of their names because people decided that sugar was bad for them.  Are you saying that they actually removed the word because sugar isn't the primary sweetener anymore?

I think it was a combination of the two.  The desire to deemphasize the sugar content so parents could feel better about giving it to kids, and eventually to cover for the switch to other sweeteners.

No, but I remember a "Rice Crispies."  There used to[and still may be] another cereal called "Corn Flakes."

Before Sugar Crisp, they used to be called "Super Sugar Crisp".

And isn't it Rice Krispies (with a "K")?

I grew up on those Hefty sized bags of Puffed rice and puffed wheat. There was a lot and it was cheap.

Yeah, Kellogg still makes Rice Krispies and Corn Flakes!  Corn Flakes are nice when I'm in the mood for something bland.

Madawee, it's so funny you should mention those, because when I was posting earlier, I thought about them, too! I liked the puffed rice better than the puffed wheat. Of course, I loved them with sh*tloads of sugar on them. :)

Good cereal recipes for those watching their sugar intake:

3 parts Rice Krispies, 1 part Cocoa Krispies

3 parts Rice Krispies, 1 part Fruity Pebbles  (this one's my favorite!!)

I think you are right that they were always called Sugar Pops on the commercials.

The corn might have always been there on the box or it may have been added pre Corn Pops transition.

Cereals really took a dump when they switched to whole grain a few years ago. Granted, they are healthier, but it sure killed the taste.

I remember when I was a kid, around 1985, when I was eating a bowl of Frosted Mini-Wheats I saw that the box said "New wheat taste." Do you know what this meant? They got rid of most of the sugar coating, the best part! Now it tastes like regular shredded wheat.

That just makes you appreciate the frosting more.  Plus I think whole grain tastes good.

That’s the same reason that Kentucky Fried Chicken became just KFC. They wanted to deëmphasize what the F stands for.

I wasn't born during the time of all-sugar cereals and even I wish they'd put SOMETHING sugar-frosted and dipped in chocolate...kinda like Frosted Sugar Bombs or Cowboy Crunchies. Smile Anything but this all-vitamin-and-mineral crap! LOL Boo! Down with Minerals! Up with Sugar!
