The Coronavirus is a URI (Upper Respiratory Infection), so why is there such a huge run on toilet paper? Wall*Mart is out of toliet rolls, and so is the Vallarta Supermarket here in Fresno CA. USA. Apparently, they sell out within minutes of it being put out.

We had no choice but to buy a shitload of paper napkins to use as rollios. Confused

Anybody? Question

Just a simple case of panic.  People are afraid of quarantines and want enough essential items at home.  I went to the store to buy some milk and the shelves were bare.  No toilet paper, no soup, no bread, no veggies, no Lysol, etc. I really don't understand the reasoning of all this.  People are afraid of catching the virus and load up on groceries so they can stay home.  But in order to GET these groceries, they have to go to the store and mingle with hundreds of people doing the same thing.  What is the logic in that?  Why can't we just use common sense and take the precautions recommended by the CDC?  I'm not making light of the situation, just employing what I think is rational thinking.

I think, on some level, people enjoy the panic. It gives them something to focus on, along with a sense of community.

I would imagine that the logic and reasoning is something along the lines of... "It hasn't gotten here yet, so we'll run out and mingle in the crowded stores now while it's still presumably safe and then lock ourselves inside slathered from head to toe in Purell after it hits".

Or something like that.

I did it last night.

It suddenly occurred to me that I'd probably better get to the grocery store sooner rather than later. Was going to go today, but decided right then would be better, so at 10:30 pm, I headed to Walmart Neighborhood Market.

When I got there, the check out lines stretched across the store and the non-perishable food aisles looked like bombs had gone off in them. The canned foods, breads, and hand-sanitizer/spray disinfectants were cleaned out. There were a few canned items left which I managed to get a few of. Canned hash, veg/beef soup, chili, sliced peaches.

Got a month's supply of canned cat food and a 16 lb bag of dry food, so at least "the boss" won't go hungry.

Unless I end up having to eat HIS food….  Ermm

I figured this would be a good time to, what I call "eating out of the freezer".  I end up with some strange oddball meals, but it gets the freezer cleaned out.

Plenty of milk at the convenience store, I love my Moo Juice! We have a 12 pack of toilet paper. The wife did use a lot of TP when she had her cold...to blow her nose. I prefer a paper towel.  Lots of people out and about.

Yep. Like that chicken that's been in there 10 years (and through maybe 3 blackouts).

Speaking of "eating out of the freezer", it occurred to me last night at Walmart, that there hasn't been the kind of run on frozen and refrigerated foods that there was on the non-perishable stuff like canned and dry food.

I wonder if a lot of people think the corona virus is going to knock out their electricity, too?

I'm surprised the home improvement stores aren't seeing a run on plywood and generators.... Ermm

LOL

At my Walmart the panic buyers have also cleaned out the freezer section.  I went to Walmart last night and saw just 3 Hungry Man frozen dinners left.  Three!  No french fries, no frozen bread, can't remember what else was gone.  Just a bunch of almost empty freezers. Unfortunately, these panic shoppers are turning everyone into hoarders.  People that are trying to be reasonable about buying things are being forced into panic buying as well because there's no other way to get what you need.  Grab it now or it will be gone!

Have no idea what, if anything, I'll find.

TP shortage?  I didn't even need any paper products today!  I can't say if they were sold out or not!

Others are thinking about the 'bidet' toilet?

For the budget minded, the minds over on the CF have a better idea!
