These are mostly local, but how annoying is it to have some doofus standing there, promoting his/her own business, when he/she's not TV friendly? Some are wooden, obviously reading from a cue card, while others rant, rave or flaunt their family members. One in my market features a middle-aged lady tossing her bleached hair and vamping to the camera. Another includes the owner's daughter mumbling something that I still haven't figured out. The worst is a Western wear store that has a very old lady yapping about their products, while ogling several young men wearing overalls with no shirts underneath.

In the Anthony's commercial, the middle-aged pony-tailed bleached blonde used to sing:
PI4-two two hundred
PI4-two two hundred
That's the number
For the plumber
PI4-two two hundred
Then, she'd pull her hair out of its ponytail, swing her hair loose, and exclaim "Anthony's!!"
The Potamkin Cadillac lady had a rock solid bleached blonde hairdo. So, instead of tossing her hair around, she dropped her full-length mink coat to the floor in a demonstration of how successful her business was.

We have a furniture store that's been doing commercials for as long as I can remember. The owner's name is Jim McIngvale (aka Mattress Mack
), and for as long as he's been doing commercials, they've always ended with him saying Gallery Furniture really will SAVE YOU MONEY!!!" |

"Paul of the Diamond Center"
This one aired in the SF/Bay Area from probably 1988 (based on the girls' frizzy hairdos) through the early 2000s. Paul became a bit of a local celeb. He had a lotta commercials.

The whole commercial is a gem if you love to despise commercials. The best part, though, is how Dvorkin refuses to look at the camera. He looks like a blind person.

Of course, the "power chair" people (Tom Kruze and that other balding guy) are the current major offenders in this category.

I think Nathan oughta run a "Worst Local Ads" contest, kinda like the Miss America competition- he could review submissions from all 50 states, and decide who's the worst.
This worked for SureFit, the sofa cover company- they run an "Ugly Couch" contest every year. Truly hilarious. Plus it would be a good way to draw traffic to the website.

Synthesia must be from Boston and he has to be talking about Bob Kaufmann of Bob's Discount Furniture. This little douche has been annoying people for about 20 years on both TV and radio. His marketing strategy since the beginning has been to call everyone in the furniture business a crook...........except him, of course. Most of his ads are criticisms of his competition.
For many years he claimed that free financing was a gimmick and not really a saving........until he started it. He said the same about in store give-aways ..........until he started bragging about how much he gave away in candy and ice cream. He claims that he has a deal with a mahogany plantation and he makes them plant two new trees for every one they cut down..........sure he does. Over the years he's developed some irritating catch phrases: "BUSTED", "I DOUBT IT", "BOBINIZED" which he screeches at the top of his lungs.
He has a very irritating voice and a phony forced smile. By the way, the hot blonde is not his wife. She's head of the personnel department. He's not the sole owner. I read that he owns about 25%. I have never puchased anything or even been in one of his stores. I just hate his commercials that much.

This site is a perfect example of this. It's Time Warner Cable's commercial services "demo reel"

I am so glad to see that so many others feel this way. I spent a dozen years in the radio business. In all that time there was a saying among fellow radio folk:"Clients should NEVER be allowed to voice their own commercials". I remember one instance where a local insurance agent insisted on doing his own ads. EVERY time he came in to record his commercials he was totally DRUNK! I mean he could hardly walk. We would all run a pool to find out who would be stuck with engineering this clown, and trying to clean up his ad.

I am in the Boston area and I agree with everything that has been said about Bob's Furniture. I HATE HATE HATE his commercials. It has to be something with furniture stores, I swear. Because, Bernie and Phyll's Furniture does the same thing and so does Jordan's Furniture. The guy in the Jordan's Furniture commercial may not be an owner, but he's as obnoxious as hell.

In the town where I grew up, a little bitty town like Mayberry, there's a furniture store called Carl Pierce Furniture where the owner does all the ads. He advertises on our local radio and TV station and he just goes on and on and on. His ads seem like they're about three minutes long. He makes my ears bleed.

We have a small scale local amusement park (go karts, video arcades, small rides, etc.) called "The Fun Spot". The owner (the geek in the blue shirt in the video) & his employees do the ads & the tag line is...
IT'S HUGE!!!!!!!!
I don't hate these though, because he seems like a pretty cool guy & at least they put a little variety & humor in the ads.

Speaking of wooden & stiff, this guy is the worst.
And he's actually gotten better than he used to be.
He's always used the same little gimmicks like pointing at himself with both thumbs & at the end he points at the camera with both fingers & says "Whatever it takes."

Krissybean--The guy in the Jordan's commercials was the owner along with his brother. They inherited it from their father. When the business was sold (to Warren Buffet), one brother stayed on to do commercials. The other went to the west coast to relax and count his money. One thing I've never understood is Barry's hairdo. Here's a millionaire in his 60s with gray hair and he has a pony tail. I'm picturing him looking in the mirror in the morning and thinking that it's a good look.
Believe it or not at one time the brothers (Barry and Elliot) had a series of very good commercials, that were actually quite entertaining. They were very professional, well done, and funny.
Bernie and Phyll are pretty hokey, but at least they're not calling other furinture stores crooks, likre Bob.
