This is when they take a popular song and CHANGE THE LYRICS so the song is about the product.

Remember "Toyota's Hot Hot Hot" and Budget Gourmet's "Things That Make You Go Mmmm" ?

This is not the same as when they use a song you used to love, and play it until you hate it - like what Cadillac did to Led Zeppelin (as if any Cadillac driver can STAND Led Zeppelin). Now I have to skip past the song when I pop in the cd because I've gotten so sick of hearing it.

Funny, does anyone remember one of the early Wal-Mart commercials where instead of "Working in a Coal Mine", it's "Working on a Rollback"?  LAAAAAAAMMMMMMMEEE!

Also, does anyone remember any early Applebee's commercials where some certain songs were bastardized as well ("It Takes Two", etc.)?

As far as playing the same songs over and over in commercials go, well, besides the early Cadillac commercials where they kept playing Led Zeppelin's "Rock and Roll", but don't forget the '96 Toyota commercials where "I am Everyday People" (something like that) were playing over and over as well, just to name one of the few.
Mankind is divided into two classes: those who earn their living by the sweat of their brow, and those who sell them handkerchiefs, cold drinks, and electric fans.

I remember when Walmart changed the lyrics to "Secret Agent Man" to "Secret Rollback man" Dead

I remember those Toyota "HOT HOT HOT" commercials with fondness, IDK commercials seemed to be better back then, maybe it's me. It could've been the fact there were less of them each commercial break.

the ABSOLUTE  WORST egregious destruction of a song HAS TO BE "Viva Las Vegas" being razed and rebuilt with bad stinky glue that hasn't dried into the terrible crappy tune "Viva Viagra" Dead

I CAN'T STAND THAT SONG!!!!!!!

My favorite (really!) was a commercial for Spirit brand bath soap
that used Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Gimme Three Steps". UNREAL.

Original Lyrics:

Gimme three steps, gimme three steps mister
Gimme three steps towards the door
Gimme three steps, gimme three steps mister
You'll never see me no more

Spirit bath soap commercial:

Gimme three soaps, gimme three soaps, Spirit!
Gimme three soaps all in one!

So why didn't Spirit the brand go with Spirit the band?

Sounds like poor research and lack of creativity on their part...LOL

(Although it would make me sad... I hate to see my favorite bands' songs in commercials).

Don't think I'd buy a soap that would have a 'line on me'...so, skip Spirit the band.

That's true, sometimes I forget that they only use the songs that everyone will recognize... and that one's about it for Spirit...

I agree with you 100%!!!! I have come to loathe that song. Not sure if I liked it before the commercials or not, cause I never really heard it, but now I guess I'll never have the chance.UnhappyUnhappy It's so annoying how commercials try and play with our emotions by having a song they think will make us feel a certain way to go out and spend our hard earned money on their crappy products. It's repulsive!
Course, maybe I am biased, cause I am a musician and take music seriously. Using good songs to sell some stupid product just burns me. AngryAngryAngry

Would you include horrible covers in this category? These songs have been bastardized by hiring no-names to sing them:
* Geico / "Somebody's Watching Me" ... actually remixed
* Hampton Inn / "With A Little Help From My Friends"
* JC Penney / "Don't You Forget About Me" ... at least I think it was JC Penney
* Almost every back to school sale commercial

I'm getting sick of hearing the cover of the Beatles' Instant Karma in that Chase Bank commercial.

All the new Swiffer ads "Baby come back", etc.
I think Lee is using "I like the nightlife" and "Just what I needed"

I really can't stand commercials that just use ONE line of a chorus (Aspen Dental, "When I see you smile") and then cut out the rest of the vocals and just repeat that one line half a dozen more times.

For some reason, the recent Lincoln commercials haven't bugged me with covers of "Major Tom" and "Under the Milky Way" - maybe cuz they use real covers. Probably cuz I'd loves me a Lincoln...even if it didn't have wheels.

Oh I dunno.... I think they coulda come up with a nice, cheesy bastardized version of that song fairly easily.....

Let us take you baby, into your bathroom tub
Got a bar of soap we know you'll wanna ruuuuuub!!!!!

Oh we got our su-u-uds on you babe (We got our suds on you, babe)
Oh we got our su-u-uds on yoooouuuu.....

(signature guitar lick)
da-da da-dada -- da-da da-dada

Or maybe instead of "we got our suds on you..." they could say....

"Oh we're gonna la-a-ather you...."

Works either way.

On a side note... Spirit had another well known (at the time) hit before "I Got A Line On You" called "Mechanical World"

Definitely not commercial jingle material, though...

Upon spotting this thread, I just had to point out how this one vile commercial desecrated “That’s Amore” with cheesy background music and lyrics about logistics. I forget if it was UPS or FedEx, one of those companies that chucks computers over front gates.
