As usual, the comment section has more useful information than the article. Here's a good comment:

Quote This was very much purposeful thing, and Disney does have a sound strategy behind this decision. They're actually finally wriggling free--they've been trying to shed the "family" moniker for years.

When Disney bought the company in 2001, it was already called The Family Channel. TFC had existing contracts with advertisers who had significant amounts of money invested and who were staunchly opposed to non-family-friendly programming. They threatened to take their money and go elsewhere if Disney tried to make any changes that would go in that direction, and so the buyout had all these contractual obligations tied to it. That's why TFC still sucked for so many years after Disney bought it and had nothing but Andy Griffith, Leave it to Beaver-type reruns and other "wholesome" fare.

Disney was able to squeak in the name change to ABC Family, and has incrementally been inching away from that demographic over all the years since. PLL and the other "becomer"-targeting shows were a big push in the right direction, once TV itself became less uptight. Once those shows started to really get popular and competitive, Disney was able to get a healthy mass of advertising dollars through a combination of winning over some of the existing advertisers, getting new ones who were already on board with Disney's ideas, and non-renewing contracts with others. And now that the name of the channel seems so at-odds with what their programming is, "Heck, it sure would make sense to change the channel's name, wouldn't it?"

Makes sense and while the name is weird...it's still better than "syfy"

Everything, including reality shows. Expect Freeform to start "Freeform" reality crap as well. I suppose most people still remember when this was The Family Channel in the 1990s, and before that, CBN Cable Network! Lots of family-friendly programming, and some game shows as well. Now it's just crappy sitcoms and dramas, Disney movie reruns and they have reruns of Dawson's Creek and always, have the 700 Club.

I remember a couple years ago say mid-2000s ABC Family reran Bob Saget hosted Americas Funniest Home Videos at midnight. It was a time warp! this will probably end in the transition to Freeform! If it hasn't ended already!

Honestly, if they could get rid of the 700 [dunces] club, they could become a 24 hour midget-porn channel and I'd support it. :P
